I didn't get into sports until late in HS and at that point I was far too behind the curve to do anything but at best be a bench warmer on my HS basketball or football team, who were both pretty good at the time, and I didn't really care about any of the other sports. Football won a state title or two during my time there and basketball would win one behind a freshman phenom the year after I graduated. Only way a guy with no organized playing experience was going to make those teams was if they were a freak athlete or happened to have a lot of individual skill.
So I don't have any Uncle Rico high school stories to tell.
But in college I was the manager for our men's basketball team. There was a three-point contest at halftime for the fans for like $50 I think, they needed three volunteers. For some reason no one wanted to be the #3 participant. So I just decided to volunteer despite being a team member (typically not allowed) and in a suit. I took off the jacket and won in walk-off fashion while wearing a tie, tucked in shirt, and wingtips lol. Hardly anyone saw it because we were a ****** team and people didn't really come to watch games unless they just loved basketball or were friends/family with someone on the team. I didn't care though, I won $50 and that was a lot of money for me.
And then in a college class for physical education majors (it was a prerequisite for one of my sport management classes), we had a week or two when we did basketball. So virtually everyone in the class was an athlete at the school, except me. Since hoops was easily my best sport, I was feeling pretty good lol. I would get to class early to get warmed up, make sure I had my shot going and everything. One day I was making everything in warmups, told the guys on the basketball team who were leaving class to stay and watch. So when the games were about to start, told my team that day to just get me the ball and let me go to work. Scored virtually every time I shot the ball, then they had to start bringing a double. I still scored or passed off the ball for an assist nearly every possession. Basketball team members who were there were going wild. It was pretty fun.
Then when I was working in college athletics, I would go down to the gym just to get shots up for the work out and for the fun of it. I was practicing my post moves - because I'm 5'9", fat, but have quick feet - so I like to throw my weight around in the paint against people who have little to no experience guarding in the low post because they generally have no idea what they are doing. One of the assistants who is 6'10" watched me a little bit before he came down to get ready for practice. This guy was a former national player of the year as a traditional low post center, he participated in several NBA training camps, played in the NBA Summer League, and played pro ball in Europe for a few years. So he was what you could say a pretty good basketball player. He came down and complimented me on my footwork and asked if I ever played in school.
Last one that comes to mind...First day as manager on the basketball team as a freshman. We had one other manager who had been with the team for a year. Coach decides to surprise the team at the end of practice by telling everyone me and the other manager were going to be playing one on one to end practice. Here I am dressed like Larry Bird in HS on the blacktop - tshirt, jeans, Chucks - because I was added as a manager the day of and hadn't brought any change of clothes (I was a commuter). Aside from the t-shirt, basically nothing any normal human being should be playing basketball in. Meanwhile, the other manager is in much more appropriate clothing - t-shirt, Nike basketball shoes, shorts. Tie score, I drained a three-pointer for the win (playing by 1s and 2s and have to win by 2), held my arm in the air like I was Larry Bird in the three point contest that one year. The team mobbed me and lifted me up on their shoulders in celebration. I loved those guys even though are team was ******* terrible lol.
