He set an unofficial world record in the 10k at the Crescent City Classic back in the 80s, and my friends here in New Orleans still reminisce about that day on a regular basis.

I consistently point out to them that he was wearing a Todd’s Road Stumblers t shirt for that record setting performance.
When I saw him streaking back up Richmond Road miles ahead of me I remember thinking to myself "oh so that's what a world class runner looks like"

I led the state of Indiana HS Basketball for the 96/97 season in charges taken. That's an unofficial stat, of course, but I'm claiming it.

Had 8 birdies and an eagle in a round but only tied my lifetime low of 2 under by 3 putting on 5 other holes.

Hit a basket over Med Park in a church league bb game. He was a former St. Louis Hawk. Also on that squad but not defending me was some guy who had played for North Texas and had held Oscar Robertson to 8 points in a game against UC.

Hit a home run as my 4th grade team beat the 5th grade. Got a shout out the next day from my teacher whom I was madly in love with.

Had a pick 6 in my first ever varsity start my sophomore year on the first play of the game, against Boyle County. It was a wide reciever screen. Was honorable mention all state sophomore and junior year and first team senior year in the Herald Leader.

It's just because it was my first start and against the best team in 3A, when there were only 4 classes.

Probably the most fun I've had playing sports was my sixth grade middle school basketball team. That was before puberty back when I still had great coordination and I was a pretty good ball handler running the point. Our team was a bunch of schlubs, but it was fun going out there and just laying it all out there and battling. I was like this psycho hustler who never gave up and we snuck out some games we had no business winning. Basketball was so damn fun.
I've never been good at basketball. But when I was a kid I was ALWAYS the tallest kid in the game. So from K-6 the strategy was often just put me under the basket and throw it to me because I could jump up and grab it over everyone else. Then 8th grade happened. Suddenly in 8th grade everyone got around my height. Thus my competitive advantage ended :(

I remember being the fastest kid at my school in 5th grade and was always one of the fastest kids in early middle school in all the different timed runs and testing they did back in the day which I'm sure they don't do now. I was a late bloomer with the whole puberty thing which probably set me back, but when it did come on in like 8th-9th grade I noticed how much damn slower I was running sprints with the other kids. What a gyp.

Speaking of stuff I know they don't do anymore, I remember in middle school gym back in the late 90s we'd do all these timed tests the first week or two of gym classes to start the school year. And then they would split up everyone in separate groups based on the tests. We even got our own colored shirts to wear for each group you were on. So you'd have a purple group, a blue group, a red group, etc.

You would think they would try to equal out the teams and have a mix of athletes and, you know, the less desirables. But no, they put all of the best athletes who tested at the top on one group. I remember we were the purple team, and maybe it was 8-12 kids a group. And it was clear we were the kids who tested the best. I can even remember making fun of some of the kids on the bball team who didn't make the purple group and were on the obvious second tier group, that was like red or blue. And then for the rest of the year your groups would compete against each other for basketball, dodge ball, wiffle ball, whatever we were doing that day. And we would most often just slaughter the other groups. I'll never understand the thinking behind that.

Little League football, 4 INT's and scored only TD in the game.

Little League baseball, pitched a 4 hitter against LL champs after the regular season in a tourney.

Best really is all the kids I have coached (1st grade to 8th grade) over the past 15 years in football, baseball, basketball and powder puff that see me today and approach me to talk.

My first win as a coach over a #1 ranked team, it went down to the wire. We were up by one, with seconds left on the clock, there was a foul and the opposing team had two free throws. The arena was quiet, then I hear a loudly "miss it!!!", she missed!!, leaving one shot to tie. She took the second shot, as she was releasing the ball, a second "miss it" loudly coming from the stands, she missed! We rebounded and the seconds ticked off for a 10-9 win. We took down the Little Ponies girls basketball team in the second grade championship game, going into 3rd grade as clear #1's.

Had 5 goals and 5 assists in one game during the post season hockey tournament my junior year. Not sure what caused it, but was just completely in the zone that game. Was a decent player but never the leading scorer on our teams. But something just clicked that game.

Actually after that loss I had a rough thirty years. However, I’m back training some kids and showing them the way of the fist. Miguel is my star student and his mom is my new hot babe.

Yeah I know but, I just had to. Walked many post in my days. Do you remember the UP's? Glorified gate guards in most places but, at Fliegerhorst Kaserne in Hanau we had our own drug dogs, Vans with cages for taking in drug pushers, shotguns, and night sticks. We augmented the MP's because there were not enough of them and the community commander for all of the Kasernes around Hanau (a Brigadier General) deputized volunteers who wanted to join the UP's to help so, I joined. Just about every night on the strip headed away from post was a nightmare walk for many going in to town. There were many times people were jumped and some badly beaten and cut up.
I wasn't as gung ho as many, so I rarely worked law enforcement. I worked security unless it was an emergency. I knew one guy who kept a chart in his locker. He listed every rank and everything he could ticket someone for. His goal was to put a check mark in every box.

I once outscored Barry Goheen (future Vandy legend) 27-4 in a high school varsity game. The part I leave out is that I was a Senior and he was a Freshman or Sophomore, and he only played because they were beating us by 20.

Hot Rod Hundley used to boast about the night he and Elgin Baylor combined for 73 points. Elgin had 71 and he had 2.

In an adult league out west for washed up individuals and nobodies (the league kept stats lol), we had a game that ended like this.

Down 2 with under a minute to go, I hit a three. They got fouled and scored two free throws to go up one with like 30 seconds. I came down and hit another three with like 15 seconds left. Other team called timeout, we tell guys to not let the other team shoot a three.

They bank in a three with 5 seconds left. I called timeout. We didn’t have a timeout left.

Other team missed both technical free throws. They inbound the ball and I foul to stop clock to send to the bonus. Same guy misses again. I get the rebound and get to half court for a desperation shot and get hammered as time expires.

I make two of three free throws to win the game. Pretty awesome. 😂

I didn't get into sports until late in HS and at that point I was far too behind the curve to do anything but at best be a bench warmer on my HS basketball or football team, who were both pretty good at the time, and I didn't really care about any of the other sports. Football won a state title or two during my time there and basketball would win one behind a freshman phenom the year after I graduated. Only way a guy with no organized playing experience was going to make those teams was if they were a freak athlete or happened to have a lot of individual skill.

So I don't have any Uncle Rico high school stories to tell.

But in college I was the manager for our men's basketball team. There was a three-point contest at halftime for the fans for like $50 I think, they needed three volunteers. For some reason no one wanted to be the #3 participant. So I just decided to volunteer despite being a team member (typically not allowed) and in a suit. I took off the jacket and won in walk-off fashion while wearing a tie, tucked in shirt, and wingtips lol. Hardly anyone saw it because we were a ****** team and people didn't really come to watch games unless they just loved basketball or were friends/family with someone on the team. I didn't care though, I won $50 and that was a lot of money for me.

And then in a college class for physical education majors (it was a prerequisite for one of my sport management classes), we had a week or two when we did basketball. So virtually everyone in the class was an athlete at the school, except me. Since hoops was easily my best sport, I was feeling pretty good lol. I would get to class early to get warmed up, make sure I had my shot going and everything. One day I was making everything in warmups, told the guys on the basketball team who were leaving class to stay and watch. So when the games were about to start, told my team that day to just get me the ball and let me go to work. Scored virtually every time I shot the ball, then they had to start bringing a double. I still scored or passed off the ball for an assist nearly every possession. Basketball team members who were there were going wild. It was pretty fun.

Then when I was working in college athletics, I would go down to the gym just to get shots up for the work out and for the fun of it. I was practicing my post moves - because I'm 5'9", fat, but have quick feet - so I like to throw my weight around in the paint against people who have little to no experience guarding in the low post because they generally have no idea what they are doing. One of the assistants who is 6'10" watched me a little bit before he came down to get ready for practice. This guy was a former national player of the year as a traditional low post center, he participated in several NBA training camps, played in the NBA Summer League, and played pro ball in Europe for a few years. So he was what you could say a pretty good basketball player. He came down and complimented me on my footwork and asked if I ever played in school.

Last one that comes to mind...First day as manager on the basketball team as a freshman. We had one other manager who had been with the team for a year. Coach decides to surprise the team at the end of practice by telling everyone me and the other manager were going to be playing one on one to end practice. Here I am dressed like Larry Bird in HS on the blacktop - tshirt, jeans, Chucks - because I was added as a manager the day of and hadn't brought any change of clothes (I was a commuter). Aside from the t-shirt, basically nothing any normal human being should be playing basketball in. Meanwhile, the other manager is in much more appropriate clothing - t-shirt, Nike basketball shoes, shorts. Tie score, I drained a three-pointer for the win (playing by 1s and 2s and have to win by 2), held my arm in the air like I was Larry Bird in the three point contest that one year. The team mobbed me and lifted me up on their shoulders in celebration. I loved those guys even though are team was ******* terrible lol.

My senior year in football we won the state championship, but it was private school football so it wasn’t exactly big time. The highlight for me, however, was that I was selected 2nd team all-Charlotte at linebacker. Most of the dudes who were first team (and several of those who got second) played D1. I didn’t even get a recruiting letter. I had a bunch of interceptions that I swear were all thrown directly to me. So I think they just looked at my stat line and put me second team.

As an individual: Several under 2-minute 880 yd track performances in high school. Couple D1 track coaches visited during my junior year in HS. Ran a 1:55 during one meet and finished 2nd at an invitational. Coach warned me about playing football the next season. Got injured (left knee) in a game playing safety. He was right. Luckily, I still served in the US Army after the injury.

As a coach: Led my team with 3 former JuCo basketball players to a brigade championship at Fort Hood in 1999.

-Pitched a game in high school where I struck out the first 12 batters, ended up with a 2 hitter and 17k’s in 7 innings. (Had 10+ K’s in 5 of my 8 starts that year)

-Honorable Mention: Drank a beer before going up to bat in my men’s rec baseball league, hit a HR and did the “airplane” around the bases…they hit me next time up.

You guys were in our district my senior year in 01. Both class 4A when that was the top. We beat you guys 33-0 and I literally got defensive player of the game by the team and newspaper.

You guys had no visitor stands, maybe a 2 foot sideline and nothing but a hill almost straight up past those 2 feet.

I remember the red wooden thing under your guys scoreboard mentioning the state championship? It was 92 right? I know it was 90s.
