Could be one that’s it, always been my favorite. Could be five bands equal until your favorite now. You could go back and forth and end on a different band. Could be one then another the next year then this band for a decade and you switched back. Could be many equal for years.

But it would be interesting to see your best job laying out your personal evolution of your favorite bands and how it evolved through your years.

Culture Club. First pop band with two songs I liked.
Led Zeppelin. Back when QQ only played what I thought was old music, but was just retro music to adults.
Beastie Boys. Something different i found.
Beck. Made good music at the time.
New Pornographers. Last new band I found 20 years ago. I only hear new music on car commercials now.

Bleach definitely sounds rougher than their other albums, but overall, Nirvana didn't change all that much through its short existence. Cobain expressed a desire to branch out and try new things after In Utero, but that obviously didn't happen.

Devin Townsend's my favorite solo artist but I can't track his evolution without writing a novel. Including his bands and solo work, he's got nearly 30 albums, and the styles sometimes vary spectacularly.

My musical tastes are mostly the same from high school. I'm not really into new music. I did go through phases in college, like Bruce or Led Zepplin or grunge. I liked grunge at the time but now I find it too depressing.

When I was younger, my favorite was Chicago. After Terry Kath died and they changed their style, that went away. Through high school it was Journey, Styx, Boston, REO, and Queen. I still listen to those bands today. In college it was still Journey but also went to U2, Rush, Triumph, Van Halen, Pat Benatar and many others. Now for about 30 years, Rush has been my favorite. My favorites at age 60 are Rush, Collective Soul, The Doobie Brothers and Heart.

The guilty pleasures are Carpenters and Olivia Newton-John.

ages 8-10 - Michael Jackson

11-12 - Beastie Boys with some Yo! Mtv Raps folks sprinkled in.

13-14 - Hair Bands (I know. Bon Jovi was the top, for me (I KNOW!). A little GNR for good measure.)

15-30 - R&B Groups. Boyz II Men was the main group. At one time I had an MP3 of every song they had ever realeased, which was kind of impressive in the early Napster days. Not so much now.

30-40ish - Christian Contemporary music. MercyMe would have been my favorite at the time.

40ish to now - Probably Doobie Brothers as well, up until McDonald left. I stubbornly refuse to deal with much new music except when Bruno Mars does something. /old

When I was a kid, I first remember being a fan of Prince in the Purple Rain days. In high school, Run DMC and Public Enemy were my favorites. In undergrad, White Zombie and then the whole grunge scene were my jams. After that I got on a big Reel Big Fish kick. Clutch took the title after that, and I haven't really picked up any new favorites in the last decade or so.

My Parents spun all kinds of stuff being a kid in the 70's. So back then as a wee lad I loved some Eagles, Beatles, and just about anything Motown.
As I got into the 80's I still liked all those 70's I heard but started getting into Kiss because of my cousin. They were my faves and then Def Leppard came along. All this time I was listening to hip hop and my attention turned to that. I had so much rap music I didnt know what to do with them. I bought cassettes of groups I never heard of.
In came the 90's and my favorite genre of music even today. Started with Pearl Jam and Nirvana and grew from there. They are my faves but love me some Toadies, Dinosaur Jr, STP as well. I can listen to anything really. I haven't mentioned country. Give me 90's and before country music any day over this pop crap being played today.

As a part time weekend bar band guitarist, I'm actually surprised by my taste/listening changes.

My personal evolution would be centered along style, rather than specific bands (although The Stones, ABB, Led Zep, Eagles, and ACDC would be among my favorites).

I tend to like bluesy, guitar oriented stuff. No respect whatsoever for rap. Old country, and the ones that sound "old" (like Chris Stapleton), get some attention.

My tastes nowadays have evolved to the point that I don't even listen to new rock at all... instead I listen almost strictly to jazz (Jimmy Smith- the B3 hits my taste buds just right, Joey D, Wes Montgomery, MMW). One of my bands recently added "Shut Up and Dance" to the setlist... I had never heard of it lol.

My two favorite genres since childhood in the 1980s have always been heavy metal and rap. Polar opposites with a few similarities (represented “voiceless” groups, rebellious in nature, not scared to push boundaries of what is socially acceptable in music)

Age: 8-12 I was really into the LA sound aka hair metal aka glam metal. My favorite band if that era by far was Guns N’ Roses. To my young ears they were the real deal and their peers were impostors. Also like some 80s rap like LL Cool J, Run DMC and Beastie Boys.

Age 12-15: Got really big into thrash metal and the dawn of gangsta rap. Favorites included Megadeth, Slayer, Metallica and Testament on the metal side and Dr. Dre, Snoop, Ice Cube and Too Short on the rap side

Age 15-16: Got into post-grunge, grunge and ska. Favorites were STP, Alice In Chains, Soundgarden, 311, Sublime and Reel Big Fish. Pretty big into groove metal bands as well, including Pantera and Machine Head.

Age 16-21: Got one of those big bumping stereos in my car and listened almost exclusively to rap, with an emphasis on the “dirty south” because it had so much bass. Favorites included 2Pac, Master P/No Limit, UGK, Outkast, Three 6 Mafia and Cash Money Records.

Post college: Experimented with some (then) new/popular bands like System of a Down, Radiohead, Modest Mouse, Wilco, etc. but that phase didn’t last too long because heavy music has always been

Mid 20s-30s: Metal dude. All metal. All the time. Gatekeeping.

Late 30s to present: Mostly listen to old bangers but also enjoy some newer metal artists. I no longer listen to new rap. I think that’s a genre you age out of. I still bump the classics from time to time.

90s - got hooked on blues. Stevie Ray Vaughan, Buddy Guy, John Lee Hooker. Took a deep dive and listened to old stuff like Howlin Wolf, Lightning’ Hopkins, Blind Willie McTell, Muddy Waters, Robert Johnson.

00s - Joe Bonamassa, Gov’t Mule, Derek Trucks Band, The Black Crowes, Susan Tedeschi, Kenny Wayne Shepherd, The Black Keys

10s - The Blackwater Fever, Federal Charm, The Temperance Movement, Marcus King Band, Royal Blood, Rival Sons

20s - I’ve spent most of it so far going back to more deep dives into bands like Robin Trower, Gov’t Mule, The Allman Brothers Band, The Isley Brothers

I started out as a fan of Three Dog Night at about age 12. I then started listening to Chicago and Elton John. When I was about 15 I discovered Led Zeppelin, and soon after, Pink Floyd. About a year later my nephew turned me on to Rush.

To this day, Led Zep, Pink Floyd and Rush are my three favorites. As I've gotten older, I started listening to Howard Jones, Joe Jackson and currently, The Killers.

Next would come Michael Jackson somewhere around kindergarten or 1st grade.

Bon Jovi took over around 4th grade.

Once I got to middle school I was on a country kick again and was all about Garth Brooks and that genre.

By my senior year of HS I was back into more rock and DMB was my #1.

By the time I graduated college, the Allman Bros Band was my favorite. They still share that spot now with Waylon Jennings.

By the time I got to middle school, Boston was probably my favorite although short-lived as they went dark for a long time after their first 2 albums. Cheap Trick was also one of my favorites.

High school - The Who, The Stones, Springsteen (didn't follow the crowd and enjoy Styx, Journey, Foreigner, Van Halen, REO, etc.), The Doors, CCR

College - REM, U2, Stones, classic Motown and Stax soul, Tom Petty

Post college - Blues (Muddy, BB, Freddie, Albert, SRV, et al), Stones, U2, The Black Crowes

Early 2000s - Texas country, specifically, Reckless Kelly but others in that genre, too, The Stones (up to Tattoo You), original Allman Brothers with Dickie and Duane

In the past 5-7 years: Oasis, The Pretty Reckless, more TX country, Robert Jon and the Wreck, and I still listen to many of those I've just named through Spotify

Of the Big 4 of classic era rock (Dylan, Beatles, Stones, Zeppelin), out of the 1000+ songs I've liked on Spotify, Dylan has 0, Zeppelin has 0, Beatles have maybe 6 or 7 and the Stones have probably 60+ so they've been a mainstay in my musical evolution

The first band I really liked when I was a little kid was ELO. Then in the fall of 1979 the Wall came out. The Beatles were probably the next band I discovered . Then I discovered Skynyrd. Then I discovered Led Zeppelin. Probably when I was in my 20s it was Skynyrd but since then it's been Pink Floyd and Led Zeppelin with Skynyrd not far off. I went through a big Who period in the 1980s. For me it was mainly either British rock or Southern Rock. I like a lot of classic country now that I probably would not have liked 30 years ago. My friends were listening to Merle Haggard when I was in high school and I did not think it was worth listening to. I realize I missed out. Same for Cash and Waylon

This would be so hard. I grew up when MTV was starting. So top MTV videos the first 5 years were my fave groups..... Van Halen, Bryan Adams, ZZ Top, Prince, Michael Jackson, The Police, Duran Duran, the English invasion bands... I know I'm missing tons. Then I got into hip hop and R&B when Yo MTV raps got started. New Edition, Bobby Brown, Bell Biv Devoe, Too Short, NWA, Ice Cube, Big Daddy Kane.. Then I got into the older tock stuff and alternative kind of hit at the same time.

I do remember fishing my sr year of hs and listening to Lynyrd Skynyrd, Jimi Hendrix, Pink Floyd, Digital Underground, Garth Brooks, Patty Loveless and tons of Seattle bands.

Let's be real, I'm pretty sure most of the Paddock's "evolution" ended at some point in their early 20s.

For me, over the past few years, I'd say Pinegrove, The Hotelier, Caracara, and Bon Iver have gotten most of my listens. Shortly before that, Josh Ritter and Frightened Rabbit had good runs. Before that, Death Cab for Cutie, Minus the Bear, and Kanye. Before that, Metallica, Radiohead, and Tool.
