To go along with the thread about your favorite player who is your favorite starting 5 by natural or as close to natural by position. I don't mean your favorite five players or 5 best by position of all time but your favorite by position..

PG Bobby Hurley.
SG Jim Spanarkel
C Mike Gminski
SF Grant Hill
PF Gene Banks

Sky, Great thread. I think the topic of this thread got a lot harder for me to decide on after this last year. Going off of your premise of "favorite" starting five, I'd go something like this,

Johnny Dawkins
Tyus Jones
Justice Winslow
Grant Hill
Christian Laettner.

Before last season it would have looked more like this;

Johnny Dawkins
Bobby Hurley
Grant Hill
Shane Battier
Christian Laettner

This was hard.

My fandom started in the early/mid 90s when I was 5 or 6 years old, so I don't remember Laettner or Hurley well enough to claim they're my personal favorites. Guards were the hardest...tough leaving several players off, especially J. Will, Duhon, Dunleavy, Nolan Smith, Cook, Nate James, Ewing (I feel a little better by listing them)...but my list looks like this:

Tyus Jones
J.J. Redick
Kyle Singler
Grant Hill
Jahlil Okafor

This past year's team was special. I think Tyus will go down as my favorite Duke PG of all time. Just wish we could have had him longer!

EDIT:

I'm going to steal Denn's idea and list what my favorite team would have been before last season:

Jason WIlliams
J.J. Redick
Kyle Singler
Grant Hill
Shelden Williams

OK, so is this just to build the best team or just our favorite players?

Best team is Jay Williams, Laettner, Hill, Battier, and Okafor.

Favorite team is Hurley, JJ, Laettner, Hill and Battier. Ok, maybe that's the best team. I could do this all day

I'm stealing Dukesince90's list! Laettner, Hurley, and Hill have to be on my team. That leaves 2 spots that I could agonize over for weeks. The G-Man was awesome though, and ultimately had to put on here. Redick or Dawkins...that's a tough one. For the present game with such an emphasis on the 3 I'm going with JJ. But Johnny D was such a complete offensive player...it's hard to leave him off.

Just simply your favorite players at natural positions. Not the best team you can come up with. My favorite Duke player of all time along with Grant Hill is Jim Spanarkel and he is my shooting guard. He will not make any ones top 5 Duke players of all time , probably not even in the top 15 or 20. He is just my favorite. This thread has gotten somewhat off it's intention but lot's of players have been mentioned. Wish Heyman25 would post one. I assure all of you it would blow your minds because some of you would wonder who's that and then google. OFC

Really hard to keep Scheyer, Hurley, and the Alaskan Assassin off my list.

The only change I would possibly make, and I say possibly because your lineup pretty much falls in line with mine too, would be Hurley for Williams. But that's just splitting hairs.

Really, for all intents and purposes, I just don't see how anyone's lineup could not include Laettner. That's borderline criminal and almost worthy of a ban. :) But seriously, an all-time Duke lineup without probably the greatest player and winner in program history isn't much of a lineup. Did I mention he's probably revered as one of the top three college players in the modern era? But I digress.

I think Grant and Shane are pretty much locks too....and probably Bobby too, but Jason was really good and I can handle him being there. If there's a spot where this team is weakest (not a good word at all considering the topic), I would say it's in J.J.'s spot....but then you're talking about the school's all-time leading scorer.

Interesting thread and a good read.

I agree. Any lineup without Laettner is just silly.

I think you are missing tho point of the thread. If you are picking an all time great starting line up you're right. I love Laettner but Mike Gminski is my all time favorite center. Seems like every one does consider Laettner a center on this thread. It's about your favorite players at their natural positions. Seems like every time a thread like this gets started it ends up being something else. Like I said in a post above I wish Heyman25 would post his. Some of you would come up with how did he come up with that. OFC

I understand what you are saying, sky, personal preference. And some go back further than others. Ha. I never got to see guys like Gminski, a bit before my time.

But Laettner may not be everyone's favorite big man. Casey Saunders, Bob Fleisher, Randy Denton, Sheldon Williams Cherokee Parks or even Greg Newton may be some one's favorite. Personal preference means the one you would like to see playing the position. I put Spanarkel as my shooting guard. He's not the guy I prefer as my shooting guard, that would be JJ Redick. But Spanarkel is one of my favorite players of all time. OFC

G - Bobby Hurley
G - JJ Redick
F - Grant Hill
F - Shane Battier
C - Christian Laettner If I am putting the best possible lineup on the floor this would be mine as well. Although if It's my favorite people/players then Big Z and Nolan will be on my list. I guess it depends on what makes a favorite player for each person.

In accordance with your rules, Sky, I have listed my favorites at every position, although, as you directed, another starting five could undoubtedly give them a run for their money, if not beat them to death:
C: Mike Lewis
SF: Art Heyman
PF: Christian Laettner
SG: Bob Verga
PG: Bobby Hurley

Good lineup Will and every one of those are some of my favorites. Tough lineup. Lot's of heart and hard nosed players. Especially Lewis despite being under sized just wore out any competition. OFC
