Five-star safety Caleb Downs of Hoschton (GA) announced his commitment to Alabama Wednesday afternoon.

The 5-foot-11, 195-pounder chose Alabama over schools like Ohio State, Georgia, Notre Dame, and others.

Downs will join Alabama’s top 10 recruiting class according to the On3 Consensus Team Recruiting Rankings. Alabama also has commitments from five-star defensive backs Tony Mitchell and Jahlil Hurley along with two of the top ten quarterbacks in the class in Eli Holstein and Dylan Lonergan.

Scouting Summary

Extremely well-rounded safety who has been one of the top prospects in Georgia regardless of class for much of his high school career. Shows a complete skill set as a cover safety. Has the range to cover hash to boundary with ease. Also is fluid and natural in man coverage. Outstanding ball production with 14 interceptions over the first three seasons of his high school career. Instinctual both in coverage and as a cover down defender. Identifies run plays and underneath passes very quickly. Also an active tackler. Shows of his athleticism on offense where he sees snaps at multiple skill positions, including quarterback. Has starred while playing against top competition in the Peach State. Downs currently ranks as the No. 13 player in the On3 Consensus, a complete and equally weighted industry-generated average that accounts for all four recruiting sites. He also tabs in as the No. 1 safety and the No. 1 player in the state of Georgia.

On3 ranks Downs as the No. 12 player in the 2023 On300 and the No. 1 safety.

Personal Life

Caleb Downs comes from one of the most athletic families in the country. His father, Gary Downs, was a running back at NC State and a third-round pick in the 1994 NFL draft. He spent seven years in the NFL with the Giants, Broncos and Falcons. Downs’ older brother, Joshua Downs, is a receiver at North Carolina and was a four-star prospect in the 2020 recruiting cycle. His older sister, Kameron Downs, saw playing time in all four years of her career for the Kennesaw State women’s soccer team. Downs’ mother is Tanya Downs and she also went to school at NC State.
