"I don't know what's going on at Alabama" | Urban Meyer Sheds Light on Poor Performances by the Crimson Tide

Alabama has a home loss, a scare against USF and three different quarterbacks who have taken snaps so far this season, which has Urban Meyer wondering what is going on down in Tuscaloosa right now.

The former Ohio State and Florida head coach joined On3’s Tim May for another episode of Urban’s Take, where Meyer discussed the bizarre start to the 2023 season for Alabama.

“I mean, Alabama, I don’t know what’s going on there,” Meyer said of the Tide. “I mean, the good thing is there’s a lot of football left.

“I thought, you know, the game that Texas beat them, they played better. This last game against South Florida, that was awful, you know. And I’m not just talking about quarterback play, you know. The offense line and they couldn’t run the ball, they couldn’t throw the ball. It was bad.”

The Bulls really put up a fight and were in it until the bitter end as their defense frustrated the ‘Bama offense all afternoon. Nick Saban gave Notre Dame transfer Tyler Buchner the start but he didn’t do much with it, completing 5/14 passes for 34 yards. Luckily, the Tide’s run game was just strong enough to propel them to a score late in the fourth to seal the deal.

As bad as it looked, Meyer is still willing to give Nick Saban the benefit of the doubt and knows he’ll be focused on improving this week.

“I’m sure coach will get that going down there,” said Meyer. “And, you know, I can imagine those staff meetings right now aren’t very pleasant. Because if they play like that — I’m not saying they will — but if they play like they did last week, there’s gonna be some losses showing up here.”

Alabama hosts No. 15 Ole Miss this week, a divisional rival and perhaps the strongest team in the SEC West aside from themselves and LSU. If Nick Saban’s club shows up with the same effort and execution level they did against USF and Texas, a Rebel victory in Bryant-Denny Stadium is certainly possible, at least in Urban Meyer’s eyes.
