Deion Sanders confirms he will not coach in the NFL
The biggest worry of having Deion Sanders succeed early at Colorado is that it will put him in prime position to be a top target for the next lucrative head coaching job when it comes available.
Well, Colorado faithful can rest assured knowing that he won’t be leaving for the NFL’s coaching ranks, at least. He made no promises about the ever-changing landscape of college football.
During a sitdown with Sanders, Bleacher Report’s Taylor Rooks brought up the coach’s previous lack of interest in coaching at the NFL level. Sanders was quick to make his feelings clear.
“I know you’ve said you’re never going to coach in the NFL so I’m not going to ask you that,” Rooks stated. Sanders jumped in with a quick response.
“No, I’m not,” he said.
Coach Prime did take a peek behind the NFL curtain for a second to look at his son and Colorado QB Shedeur Sanders — who is gaining more NFL attention by the week — and who he’d like to have him pair up with once he makes it to the league: Tyreek Hill.
The Cheetah has all the best qualities that Sanders could ask for in a weapon. He has the speed of Dylan Edwards, and then some. Hill has perfected the playmaking abilities that Travis Hunter had been showcasing before his injury — and more. Having an elite wide receiver like Hill to throw to would do wonders for Sanders’ career.
At the same time, that would mean Sanders would need to be a Miami Dolphin — a team that is expected to sign quarterback Tua Tagovailoa to a long-term deal if he can remain healthy this season. Crazier things have happened, but we aren’t even sure Sanders will declare for the 2024 NFL Draft after this season. According to Coach Prime, his sons won’t be so quick to declare is the price isn’t right.
“It’s about a whole lot of other things, teams, position, round projection, all of that plays a role. Because now with NIL and who they are, shoot, you can make just as much money here [at Colorado] as you can there [NFL] unless you’re one of the first five picks,” Sanders said.
The way Sanders has performed since arriving in Boulder has caught the nation by storm. If he continues on this trend, a top-five selection isn’t out of the realm of possibilities as Colorado marches into the meatiest portion of their regular season schedule.
No. 19 Colorado will take on No. 10 Oregon and No. 5 USC over the next two weeks. Sanders’ performance against the Pac-12’s premier programs will be very telling regarding whether or not he’s ready to make the jump to the NFL, or if he needs one more season of college ball under his belt before advancing his career.
