Newly named Colorado head coach Deion Sanders has hit the ground running since being announced as the Buffaloes’ head coach on December 3, and college football insider Joell Klatt is buying into the hype. Klatt is a Colorado alum, playing quarterback for the Buffaloes from 2002-2005, and he believes what’s going on in Boulder goes beyond the fun speeches and social media clips we see of Sanders.

“This is real, it’s is not just fun speeches and talking about luggage and Louis, and I mean those things are amazing that’s all anyone can by the way ask me about, but now it’s starting to become real,” Klatt said. “Because when the rubber meets the roads in college football, what is the sport all about? Players, right? You’ve gotta have the players to go out and compete and win, and now they’re starting to win some of those battles against the big boys.”

Colorado’s recent recruiting activity has made Klatt a believer, and he believes that Sanders’ moves in recruiting are just the beginning of an offseason that could be fortuitous for the program.

“How about latest news Dylan Edwards, four-star running back flips from Notre Dame to the University of Colorado. If that’s not one of these first dominos, if that’s not one of the first shots across the bow, I just do not think this is gonna be a one off. I think that after the season we’re gonna see Travis Hunter, the former number one recruit overall commit to Colorado,” Klatt said. “Obviously Shedeur Sanders his son is gonna come play quarterback, I would be shocked if we didn’t see guys like Kevin Coleman or KaTron Evans the wide receiver and defensive tackle who were top 300 recruits come with Deion from Jackson State.”

Sanders hasn’t just been active in the recruiting space, but in hiring coaches as well, making multiple moves that have garnered the attention of Klatt and others in the college football space.

“It’s also happening in terms of his staff, because remember, a big part of college football is yes the players, but you’ve got to have the staff that can recruit them and then develop them. And he gets a couple of guys that I think again shocked a lot of people throughout the college football world. Sean Lewis leaves as the head coach of Kent State and he’s going to be the offensive coordinator and Charles Kelly, the associate defensive coordinator at Alabama, he was a safeties coach and now he’s going to be the defensive coordinator,” Klatt explained.

Klatt highlighted the fact that some of the things happening in Boulder under Sanders are either unprecedented or haven’t happened in a very long time, ultimately making him a believer that this is just the beginning of a bright future for Colorado.

“When’s the last time Colorado was stealing head coaches to be their OC? Was going and taking Alabama assistants to be their defensive coordinator? Like this stuff hasn’t happened at that place for a long time, a long time. When’s the last time they won a recruiting battle with Notre Dame?” Klatt asked. “I mean this doesn’t happen, so there is a small groundswell and I’m just telling you this wasn’t just a cute press conference and a great speech on social media. And it’s not just the energy in the basketball arena when they introduce him on the big screen, it’s not just his first recruiting weekend, it’s going to be the second recruiting weekend. What we’re gonna start to see, I guarantee you, is dominos not just start to tip over but stack on top of one another.”
