Florida State landed a commitment Monday from Clearwater (Fla.) Clearwater Academy International four-star offensive tackle Lucas Simmons. The pledge moved the Seminoles up to No. 17 in the 2023 On3 Consensus Team Recruiting Rankings. Florida State’s class is currently No. 4 in the ACC behind Clemson, Miami and Louisville.

Simmons chose the Seminoles over Florida, Tennessee and USC. His commitment elevated Florida State’s class one spot from No. 18.

“(Florida State) saw something in me before most schools did, so that means a lot,” Simmons told On3 in June. My relationship with (offensive coordinator/offensive line coach) Alex Atkins is strong too. Our relationship has developed so naturally for over a year. He and (head) coach (Mike) Norvell has really put a lot of time in recruiting me.”

Simmons is the No. 117 overall prospect and the No. 11 offensive tackle in the 2023 On3 Consensus, a complete and equally weighted industry-generated average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies. On3’s rankings rate him even higher as the No. 87 overall prospect and No. 7 offensive tackle.

Simmons continues Florida State’s busy summer on the recruiting trail

Simmons is the third-highest ranked prospect in the Seminoles’ 2023 class behind Highland Home (Ala.) four-star EDGE Keldric Faulk and Orange Park (Fla.) four-star interior offensive lineman Roderick Kearney. A 6-foot-7.5, 295 pounder, Simmons is also the Seminoles’ first offensive tackle pledge of this recruiting cycle.

Landing Faulk, Kearney and Simmons, three top-120 prospects, marks the continuation of a successful summer for Norvell, whose squad gained a lot of recruiting momentum in June.

Florida State started off the month by landing commitments from Meridian (Miss.) three-star athlete Quindarrius Jones and Hutchinson (Kan.) Community College three-star EDGE Jaden Jones on June 11. The Seminoles also notched a pledge from Fort Pierce (Fla.) Fort Pierce Westwood three-star wide receiver Vandrevius Jacobs 10 days later.

Norvell then earned one of his biggest wins when Kearney committed to Florida State on June 26. The Seminoles closed out the month by notching a pledge from Duluth (Ga.) three-star linebacker DeMarco Ward two days later.

Seminoles still in contention for talented recruits

Florida State’s class currently contains six four-stars. They include Simmons, Faulk, Kearney, New Bern (N.C.) four-star defensive lineman Keith Sampson Jr., Miami Gulliver Prep four-star EDGE Lamont Green Jr. and Brentwood (Tenn.) Ravenwood four-star quarterback Chris Parson.

The Seminoles are still in the hunt for other four-stars such as Tallahassee (Fla.) John Paul II Catholic four-star safety Makari Vickers, Jacksonville (Fla.) Westside defensive lineman Jordan Hall and Chipley (Fla.) wide receiver Daquayvious Sorey.

According to the On3 Recruiting Prediction Machine, Florida State is in the lead for Vickers’ commitment at 27.2%. The Seminoles, however, have lower odds for Hall and Sorey at 15.7% and 2.3%, respectively.
