Georgia tight end Brock Bowers entered the season as the best tight end in the country, but was only considered a darkhorse Heisman candidate because of voting trends on the award in recent years. There’s nothing under-the-radar about his Heisman candidacy now.

Quarterbacks — led by USC’s Caleb Williams and Washington’s Michael Penix Jr. — are still the favorites to win the award but Bowers is doing everything in his power to give them a fight.

But he said the award is not a concern for him.

“It’s pretty cool,” Bowers said after the game about being mentioned in the Heisman race.

After a slow first three weeks, Bowers had caught 100-plus yards in each of the last three games. This past week against Kentucky, he had seven catches for 132 yards and a touchdown.

Bowers has 37 catches for 535 yards and four receiving touchdowns on the year. He also has a rushing touchdown.

His play has been leading to some call this month ‘Brocktober.”

“It’s pretty funny,” Bowers said, adding that he does like the term.

Bowers is already one of the most decorated tight ends in recent college football memory with All-American honors, a John Mackey Award and two national titles. But a Heisman Trophy — even being a Heisman Trophy finalist in New York — would elevate him to even greater heights

Prior to the game during the week, SEC Network analyst and former Heisman winner Tim Tebow said Bowers is fully in the conversation to win the Heisman.

And while Bowers has great stats, Tebow explained how his impact goes beyond that.

“He’s in it,” Tebow said. “He’s in it. He’s in the conversation, and I think if you look at everything he does and really just don’t look at stats — I would encourage all the voters, please look at all the plays. Please looks at the jet sweeps, the motions, the way he draws defenders, the way he’s on slip screens with eyes on him allowing other players to get open, the way on third down he drew a couple of guys and now Ladd’s 1-on-1, when they run a toss sweep and he’s on the edge blocking down on a defensive end that outweighs him by probably 35 pounds and he locks his edge and runs the number with him to give Georgia a six yard gain. They need to look at all those plays.”
