Kirby Smart gives look at Georgia linebacker room after Jamon Dumas-Johnson injury | UGA Football

Brock Bowers is speeding down the road to recovery. On Monday, Georgia head coach Kirby Smart provided an injury update on his standout tight end.

“He’s been great. He’s done everything we ask,” Smart told the press. “He ran on Friday, did a good workout. He had Saturday off, obviously. He continues to work and we’re going to do everything we can to get him back as fast as we can.”

After suffering an ankle injury during the second quarter of Georgia’s Week 6 win over Vanderbilt, Bowers underwent tight-rope surgery on his left ankle. Before being sidelined, Bowers amassed 37 catches for 545 yards and four touchdowns this season. He also tallied four carries for seven yards and a touchdown.

In the past, Smart has stated the staff is not putting any type of timetable on Bowers’ return. After defeating Missouri 30-21 on Saturday, the Bulldogs remain undefeated. While Bowers can’t currently take the field for UGA, he’s not letting his injury stop him from helping his team.

“He’s great,” Smart said of Bowers after UGA’s win over Florida. “He’s the spirit of this team.

“I just wanted to make sure he rehabs, put my own eye on him,” Smart quipped. “This guy has been in every meeting. He was in the punt walkthrough today. He goes to everything. He’s front and center, on time, ready to go and still he gets all of his rehab done.”

Bowers not only focuses on his own growth but those around him. Specifically, the junior TE has been helpful for his backup, Oscar Delp.

“Yeah, he’s been great. He’s been at every meeting. He’s with us every time we’re watching film,” Delp said. “He’s the same Brock he’s been when he’s healthy. I’m excited to kind of have him there always with us and talking with us. He’s always going to be an extra brain over there.

“He’s just so smart with the game of football and everything, just what he sees. He’s a great teammate, so it’s been great having him with us still,” Delp said. “Outside of the playing field, it’s almost like nothing ever happened. He’s still in every meeting, doing everything that he’s always doing.”

Smart would expect nothing less from his star Bulldog.

“Everybody looks at him. We’ve had other guys get that injury, and they disappear for weeks. They come back. He hasn’t missed anything. He loves football, and he loves this team,” Smart said. “That’s just the kind of kid he is.”
