Kansas is reportedly giving a vote of confidence to head football coach Lance Leipold. His contract is being extended.

The Jayhawks added a year to Leipold’s contract, meaning his deal will now run through 2027, ESPN’s Pete Thamel reported. He’s gearing up for his second season in Lawrence and Kansas showed some promising signs last season under his leadership.

The Jayhawks went 2-10, but picked up their lone Big 12 victory in an upset win over Texas. They also had a 17-7 lead over Oklahoma and kept it close against TCU, which were big steps for a program that didn’t win a game in 2020.

Thamel added Kansas considered last season “Year 0” for Leipold since he wasn’t around for spring practice and didn’t have much time with his team until summer training camp. Now, his contract will wind up being a full six-year deal.

Report: Kansas expected to hire former Nebraska OC Matt Lubick as analyst

Following his departure from the Nebraska program in November, former Cornhuskers offensive coordinator Matt Lubick is reportedly joining the Kansas Jayhawks staff as a senior analyst. ESPN’s Pete Thamel shared that the two parties are finalizing the deal on Thursday.

Nebraska head coach Scott Frost fired Lubick along with his offensive line coach Greg Austin, running backs coach Ryan Held and quarterbacks coach Mario Verduzco. The Huskers were coming off of a four-game losing streak in which they’d lost three of the four by a touchdown. Despite the changes, Nebraska lost the final two games of the season, again by a score in each loss.

The Jayhawks only notched two wins in 2021, the first season under Lance Leipold. The Big 12’s hardest struggling team could use some more offensive juice. The Jayhawks had the 114th offense last season, averaging just 20.9 points per game.
