Former Michigan point guard Dug McDaniel has committed to Kansas State, he announced on Instagram on Wednesday. McDaniel has multiple years of eligibility remaining.

In two years playing at Michigan, McDaniel established himself as the go-to lead guard with a strong scoring knack. He averages 12 points per game across 60 career games.

But after head coach Juwan Howard was fired following this season, McDaniel ended up in the transfer portal and quickly has found a new home at Kansas State playing for Jerome Tang.

McDaniel played high school football at Paul VI (Va.) Catholic School, where he was a four-star prospect. He was the No. 85 overall recruit in the 2022 cycle, according to the On3 Industry Ranking, a weighted average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies.

McDaniel recently took a visit to Kansas State days prior to committing.

During the 2023-2024 season, Dug McDaniel led Michigan with 16.3 points and 4.7 assists per game. He also had 3.7 rebounds per game while shooting 44 percent on twos, 36.8 percent on 152 three-point attempts, and 77.4 percent from the free throw line.

From mid-January into February, Dug McDaniel served a unique road game suspension. During that time, he was suspended from six straight road games, all of which Michigan lost. That was part of a very difficult season, which saw the Wolverines lose 18 of their final 20 games. That includes a nine-game losing streak to end the year.

Over the course of his two seasons at Michigan McDaniel played in 60 total games, starting 52 of those contests. He averaged 32.8 minutes per game during his Michigan career.

Kansas State isn’t the first visit that Dug McDaniel has made during the transfer process. He also previously took the time to visit another Big 12 school, TCU.

To keep up with the latest players on the move, check out On3’s Transfer Portal wire.

Michigan and the Transfer Portal

The Transfer Portal opened on March 18th, 2024. That was the day after Selection Sunday and only a couple of days after Michigan decided to move on from head coach Juwan Howard. With that, the process of having players enter the portal and coaches evaluating their rosters and the players to potentially add through the transfer portal began.

However, new Michigan head coach Dusty May wasn’t hired until nearly a week after the Transfer Portal was open. That could, in theory, slow down where the new Wolverines staff is in its assessment of the Transfer Portal class.

Along with Dug McDaniel, Tarris ReedYoussef Khayat, and George Washington III all entered the Transfer Portal. Reed also took a visit to Kansas State.
