We are less than two weeks from the start of the college football season, and the LSU Tigers have yet to name their starting quarterback for their week one matchup against the Florida State Seminoles. But during Tuesday’s press conference, head coach Brian Kelly hints at when he will make that decision.

“We’re closing in on making the decision. The two of them are outstanding quarterbacks. You guys, probably, if you were voting as a group here, it might be split in this room; it’s pretty close,” said Kelly. “I think you could probably understand why, for us, we’re not jumping out there giving you a quarterback. Because they’re both fine quarterbacks, and it’s that close. But we’re going to have to make a decision here in the next few days.”

There is no rush for the Tigers to name their starting quarterback. But after the recent decision of Myles Brennan, the battle for the starting position has become a two-man race between Garrett Nussmeier and Jayden Daniels. But the Tigers will have to set their depth chart soon, officially naming a starter, and that could happen by week’s end.

“We’re going to start to exchange scout teams probably Friday of this week,” Kelly said. “We’ll use Friday, Saturday, and next Tuesday as the three bonus days for Florida State. And then Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday, another three days for Florida State. So as long as we’ve got our decision made by the end of the weekend and then we make some kind of announcement, whether it’s Monday or Tuesday of next week, we feel like we’ll be in a good position.”

Kelly is going to hang onto this decision for as long as he possibly can. For him, it’s more about putting his team in the best position to win than anything else.

Brian Kelly addresses possibility of multiple quarterbacks playing in Week 1

It appears that it is a tough decision for Kelly to choose between transfer quarterback Daniels and sophomore Nussmeier. But there is another option on the table for the Tigers headman; he could play both of them. During a recent presser, Kelly gave his thoughts on the possibility of playing both quarterbacks in LSU’s season opener.

“I don’t know if I have an answer for that question,” Kelly said. “I think we need to make a decision, start who we feel gives us the best chance to win but know that both of them are quarterbacks that can help us win the SEC. So however that plays out – it’s really hard for me to answer that question looking forward. But I think in the moment, we feel really good about both of those quarterbacks.”
