The Miami Hurricanes football program still has at least one more major hole to fill and that is their defensive coordinator position. And now it looks like the Hurricanes have zeroed in on the next man for the job. According to Matt Zenitz, sources close to the program say that Miami is targeting coveted veteran defensive coordinator Kevin Steele for the position.

Steele has worked at some of the biggest programs in the country, most recently working at Tennessee as the interim head coach between Jeremy Pruitt and Josh Heupel. Before then, he was the defensive coordinator for Auburn and has held the same position at Alabama, Clemson, and LSU.

As it currently stands, two major programs are vying for the services of Steele; The Hurricanes and the Big Ten’s Maryland Terrapins. On Friday, news broke that the Terrapins Were eyeing the veteran defensive coordinator and were close to finalizing a deal. But as of Tuesday, it appears that those plans have been put on ice, and Steele is headed to the sunny beaches of Florida as the newest member of the Hurricanes coaching staff.

Maryland to hire Gunter Brewer

The Maryland Terrapins are expected to hire Louisville’s Gunter Brewer as their next receivers coach, per On3’s Matt Zenitz. He is set to replace Zohn Burden, who joined the staff at Duke this offseason.

Brewer has spent the past three seasons in Louisville after a one-year stint with the NFL’s Philadelphia Eagles. He has also coached for Oklahoma State, North Carolina, Ole Miss and Marshall in the college ranks.

Early in his career, Brewer got the opportunity to work with receivers who would go on to become stars. He coached Randy Moss while at Marshall and Dez Bryant with Oklahoma State. The coach was a part of the 1996 Marshall team that went undefeated and claimed a NCAA Division I-AA national championship.

Maryland already has a talented receiving corps for its new coach to work with. The Terps return Rakim Jarrett, who led the team with 829 yards receiving and five touchdowns this past season. They also get star receiver Dontay Demus back from a season-ending knee injury and added Florida transfer Jacob Copeland.

The Terrapins also bring back starting quarterback Taulia Tagovailoa, the younger brother of Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa. He finished the year with 3,860 passing yards, 26 touchdowns and 11 interceptions.
