More details are starting to emerge about Nebraska’s coaching search, according to a report. The job Mickey Joseph isn’t going unnoticed, but Cornhuskers athletic director Trev Alberts is still talking to some experienced coaches about the job.

FootballScoop’s John Brice reported former TCU coach Gary Patterson and former Baylor and Carolina Panthers coach Matt Rhule are both under consideration for the job. Army head coach Jeff Monken is also in the mix, according to Brice.

Brice also reported if Nebraska decides to hire a coach other than Joseph that they’ll keep him on the staff. As part of Joseph’s restructured contract after becoming interim coach, he’d go back to associate head coach and wide receivers coach if the Cornhuskers look outside the program for their next full-time head coach.

Nebraska announced its decision to fire Scott Frost Sept. 11 and promoted Joseph to the interim head coach job. Since Joseph took over, the Cornhuskers have a 2-3 record since the loss to Georgia Southern and brought in a couple big recruits. Just last month, Nebraska brought in four-star athlete Malachi Coleman — a four-star recruit and the No. 71 recruit in the nation from the class of 2023, according to the On3 Consensus, a complete and equally weighted industry-generated average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies.

More on the reported candidates at Nebraska

Patterson served as the head coach at TCU for the last 21 years before parting ways with the program following the 2021 season. He totaled a 181-79 record during that time, taking the Horned Frogs to seven bowl games since joining the Big 12 in 2012. Prior to this season, he joined Texas as a special assistant to the head coach alongside Steve Sarkisian.

Carolina announced its decision to fire Rhule Oct. 10 after more than two years at the helm after turning Baylor into a Big 12 powerhouse. The Bears went from 1-11 in Rhule’s first season in 2017 to 11-3 in 2019 before he left for the Panthers, where he amassed an 11-27 record before his firing this year.

At Army, Monken has taken the Black Knights to new heights. They’ve appeared in five bowl games over the last six years, but have struggled to a 3-4 record this season. Still, Army could find a way to get into the bowl picture this season starting with a game against Air Force this week.
