Baker Mayfield will live by the Horns Down and die by the Horns Down. It’s just that simple for the former Oklahoma quarterback and Heisman winner.

From a young age, the Sooners legend was bought in on the Oklahoma program, despite growing up in Austin, Texas. And on the “Pat McAfee Show” on Friday, live on scene at the Texas State Fair ahead of the Oklahoma-Texas showdown, Mayfield was on hand to needle the Texas faithful and flash a Horns Down or two himself.

“No, I hated Texas,” Mayfield said, before repeating it into the mic as he settled into his seat. “I hated Texas. Grew up in their backyard. Yeah, my dad introduced me to a lot of the coaches on [Barry] Switzer’s staff so growing up I used to go to OU games all the time and just right in the enemy town down there in Austin,” Mayfield said.

Later in his interview, Mayfield even let slip that he still lives in Austin — or at least has a house and spends time there when he’s not with an NFL franchise.

He relishes the chance to be a Sooner in enemy territory.

“I actually live in Austin. Gotta walk around town and just throw these down every once in a while,” Mayfield said, doing the Horns Down. “Gets the people going,”

And his opinion on the potential for a personal foul for doing it?

“So soft. So soft,” Mayfield said.

But the good news for Mayfield is now that he’s no longer on the team, he’s free to flash the Horns Down whenever, to whomever, and wherever he pleases without fear of more than some boos and rivalry trash talk.

Mayfield is excited for his alma mater in Year 2 under Brent Venables

Last season was a departure from the success Mayfield is used to seeing from his beloved Sooners.

Brent Venables had Oklahoma looking awesome during the onset of his tenure, but the wheels fell off over the second half of Year 1 on the job. In a similar situation after their undefeated start this season, Mayfield joined the “Pat McAfee Show” to explain why he’s of the belief that the Sooners are roaring and ready to show the college football world they’re for real versus the Texas Longhorns.

“I’m excited. You know, last year obviously wasn’t a good year for them. Lost so many guys to the transfer portal. But Venables is a dawg,” Mayfield said. “He’s got that defense playing with their hair on fire, and that’s the best way that he knows how to do it, and our offense can score on anybody.

“So I mean, I’m looking forward to the matchup of our offensive group against their defense, because I don’t think either has seen the competition that they’re going to see tomorrow.”
