Oklahoma’s quarterback room underwent drastic changes on Monday. First, Caleb Williams opted to enter the NCAA Transfer Portal, leaving Oklahoma after one season. Then, former UCF quarterback Dillon Gabriel flipped his commitment from UCLA to Oklahoma, reuniting with new Sooners offensive coordinator Jeff Lebby.

Following Williams’ surprising decision to enter the portal, former Oklahoma quarterback Trevor Knight gave him some strong advice on Twitter.

“Wishing (Caleb Williams) nothing but the best,” Knight tweeted. “That being said, I hope he decides to stay at OU. I was successful as a transfer but it is not a walk in the park and the grass is not always greener. I look forward to him becoming one of the best to ever do it in the crimson and cream.”

Williams responded to Knight’s tweet, saying “Really appreciate it!”

As Knight alluded to, he began his collegiate career at Oklahoma, playing three seasons from 2013 to 2015. He threw for 3,424 yards, 25 touchdowns and 19 interceptions with the Sooners. But after the 2015 season, Knight transferred to Texas A&M. His next season with the Aggies, Knight threw for 2,432 yards, 19 touchdowns and seven interceptions. He also had 614 rushing yards with ten scores on the ground while with Texas A&M.

But Knight learned that the process of transferring schools isn’t easy, and he wanted to make sure that Williams knew that after entering the portal.

Potential landing spots have emerged after Williams entered the portal

While Knight urged Williams to stay at Oklahoma, that appears unlikely after Monday’s surprising portal decision. With Dillon Gabriel flipping from UCLA to Oklahoma, Williams’ job as the Sooners’ quarterback is already filled. But with UCLA now in need of a quarterback with Gabriel out of the picture, the Bruins have reportedly emerged as a possible landing spot for Williams.

247Sports’ Brandon Huffman reported that UCLA and Williams have had conversations already, leading to the possibility of an eventual quarterback switch with Williams and Gabriel.

“On the UCLA side, sources say the Bruins reached out to the Williams camp immediately after he entered the portal,” Huffman said. “Interest was reciprocated and, as of Monday night, it’s enough to position the Bruins among the top contenders for the top transfer available.”

Williams unseated preseason Heisman favorite Spencer Rattler as Oklahoma’s starting quarterback midway through the season. As a freshman, Williams threw for 1,912 yards with 27 total touchdowns. Williams left the possibility of a return to Oklahoma open, but that now appears unlikely to happen.

“According to NCAA rules, as a student-athlete, the only way I can speak with other schools and see who many offer the best preparation and development for my future career is by entering the portal,” Williams said when entering the portal. “Staying at OU will definitely be an option as I begin this process.”
