The Oklahoma Sooners‘ starting quarterback Dillon Gabriel will not ‘wow’ you with his measurements, for what it’s worth. He is not the prototypical size of a college or NFL quarterback. However, he is still lethal with the football in his hands. And that can be accredited to his naturally accurate style of play. During a recent interview, Sooners’ offensive coordinator Jeff Lebby explained while you can overlook Gabriel’s size, you can’t ignore his accuracy on the field.

“I think the first thing that comes to mind is just incredibly accurate. You see that all over the tape, through his high school ball. You don’t have that much production in high school and not have anticipation and accuracy,” Lebby. “So, when you’re talking about the quarterback position, two huge things that we’re always evaluating, always looking at; he has both. He’s had both for a long time. So, that was kind of the first part of it.”

Last season with the Knights was setting up to be Gabriel’s best statistical season in completion percentage. In his first two years at UCF, the junior signal caller had a completion percentage of around 60 percent. But before going down in the third game of the season last year, Gabriel completed over 68 percent of his passes.

“He’s very very natural. I think you can see that when he’s playing the game. He’s naturally spending the football it comes out of his hand; incredibly fast and quick. And he’s a guy that’s always been able to put himself in good body positions to be able to get the ball out of his hand; create accurate throws. He’s naturally done that and continued to get better at it.”

Lebby raves about Oklahoma receiver Jalil Farooq, his ‘huge future’

Opportunity is going to be there for young Oklahoma wide receivers this year, especially under offensive coordinator Jeff Lebby. A couple of established names will make an impact for the Sooners but with some departures via the transfer portal, a couple of fresh faces will have to emerge.

One of those will be Jalil Farooq, who is entering his sophomore season with Oklahoma. The wide receiver is somebody Lebby recently raved about, saying Farooq has a “huge future” in the program. Lebby listed out all of the quality traits Farooq has shown since the offensive coordinator arrived in Norman and had quite the lengthy list.

“I think the things what Jalil is that he’s continued to mature,” Lebby said. “Been the same guy in the building every single day. He’s got this huge future and I think he’s just now starting to figure it out. The guy loves competing, he loves to play football.

“To me, he’s showing what we’re all about as a unit, as a team. He’s worked incredibly hard, he’s been the same guy, he’s been accountable, he’s been dependable, he’s been tough. And so, those things have put him in a position to go do some fun things this fall.”
