Former Texas wide receiver Brenen Thompson made a bold move on Monday. After entering the transfer portal, Thompson chose to take his talents to Norman, committing to play football at Oklahoma for the 2023 season and beyond. On3’s JD PicKell gave his take on Thompson’s move across enemy lines starting with a breakdown of him as a prospect.

“Brenen Thompson, this broke I believe last night. Speedster, four-star kid, has three years left of eligibility, 5-foot-10, 168 pounds, but out of high school, he was top 20 in the country in the 100 and 200 meters. Translation, my dude is very very fast, he’s gonna be a vertical threat for Oklahoma,” PicKell said.

Thompson has a personal best of 10.38 seconds in the 100-meter dash in high school, placing first in the 200-meter state championship and second in the 100-meter his senior year. He played a limited role in Texas’ offense last year in his freshman season, recording just one catch for 32 yards, which is part of the reason why PicKell believes he’s moving on from the Longhorns’ program.

“Again, transferring from Texas to Oklahoma, and when you look at this it’s hard to really blame Brenen Thompson right?” PicKell asked. “Because you look at that receiver room in Texas and just all the weapons they have, AD Mitchell, Xavier Worthy, Johntay Cook now probably gonna factor in, Isaiah Neyor probably gonna be a guy, Jordan Whittington. Like you go down the list here, there’s only so much football to go around and Brenan Thompson I think is a little bit further down that list.”

On the flip side, the Sooners are in the opposite situation according to PicKell, as they’re looking to surround veteran quarterback Dillon Gabriel with some more weapons and add more receiving threats to their offensive attack.

“Oklahoma, wide open offense under Jeff Lebby, they’re looking for a wide receiver to step up, they got some guys they’re excited about. But quite frankly there’s still a lot of football for receivers to make a case to get, and I think Brenan Thompson is going to fir there very nicely there, or at least have a chance to make a case for himself to get some very real PT,” PicKell explained.

Thompson may be a better fit for the Sooners, but there’s no doubt that his choice adds a new layer of intrigue surrounding one of college football’s most storied rivalries.

“Now we’d be remised if we didn’t at least mention while this is a business decision for Brenan Thompson, like I believe this was best for his career, best for his lifestyle, whatever you want to say, good move for him to transfer. When it comes to October 7th for the Red River rivalry, it’s going to be personal,” PicKell said. “I’m very excited to see what Brenan Thompson does and excited to see if he does get some PT because that’d be a lot of fun to watch him line it up against his former teammates and potentially make some plays.”
