Oklahoma saw their future nonconference schedule change on Wednesday. The SEC “directed” both Georgia and Tennessee to not play their home-and-home series against the Sooners, meaning there were openings in Norman for the 2023, 2024, and 2031 seasons.

One of those was immediately filled by athletic director Joe Castiglione, with SMU being added to the schedule. The Mustangs will head up I-35 to face off against Norman in 2023, while the return trip to the Park Cities will be made in 2027.

“We’re grateful to be able to fill the Georgia scheduling gap with the series against SMU, a program that has won 25 games over the last three seasons,” Castiglione said in a statement. “Special thanks to SMU Athletics Director Rick Hart for his cooperation during this shift in scheduling.”

Oklahoma has a long history in the city of Dallas. Every year, the football team and fans pack into the Cotton Bowl to face off against Texas in the Red River Showdown. However, they will be playing in a slightly different zip code come Sept. 11, 2027, playing at Gerald J. Ford Stadium.

The two programs have played against each other seven times throughout history, with five ending in Oklahoma wins. Only one has gone in favor of SMU, while a tie occurred in 1939. The Sooners hosted the last meeting, getting a two-touchdown victory in 1995.

SMU has been scheduling home-and-home series with a few Power Five programs over the past few years. TCU is a given, coming to town on a bi-annual basis for the Iron Skillet rivalry. Colorado and Vanderbilt will also make their way to Dallas in the upcoming years.

Looking ahead for Oklahoma, they will now not have a Power Five nonconference game next season. Their conference matchups against Big 12, or possibly SEC, opponents will have to do.
