Oklahoma true freshman wide receiver Gavin Freeman made his first college touch count and in emphatic fashion.

Taking an end-around in the first quarter with the Sooners leading UTEP 14-0, the 5-foot-10, 170 pound wideout followed his lead block to a first down, stumbled past one tackler, spun off two more would-be tacklers before turning on the jets up the sideline. A dive and shove across the pylon to cap off the touchdown scamper were just icing on the cake.

The Sooners have looked strong in the head coaching debut of Brent Venables. The offense has been crisp for Oklahoma, scoring 21 points on just 13 total plays for 229 yards as of early in the second quarter. The Miners have managed just three points as the second quarter gets going.

Oklahoma quarterback Dillon Gabriel kicked off the scoring

Are we sure that’s not Lincoln Riley’s Oklahoma? The new-look Sooners under Brent Venables scored just as quickly and as easily as OU fans are used to. With Dillon Gabriel under center, the Sooners needed just five plays to storm down the field and score a touchdown.

Gabriel completed two passes, including one to Marvin Mims for 42 yards, before he kept the ball himself for a 12-yard touchdown run. Which you can see right here:

Whew, that was fast. And Venables is supposed to be a defensive guy, right? That offense doesn’t look a step behind the Oklahoma teams of the last several years. At least if the first drive of Venables tenure is any indication.

Oklahoma 7, UTEP 0 after one minute and 17 seconds. It’s nice to have football back.
