As fall camp comes close to an end in Oxford, Ole Miss head coach Lane Kiffin broke down the team’s latest scrimmage following today’s practice. The Rebels were missing some key members of their defense due to injury, but Kiffin was satisfied with how things looked on the offensive side of the ball.

“I thought there were some really good things, we had a number of injuries defensively so we gave up some explosive plays, which obviously whenever one side does good it’s an issue with the other side. I thought that the speed of the offense was good and the mechanics with it. But again, we played without a few significant defensive players,” Kiffin said.

Kiffin was also asked about his quarterback competition between Jaxson Dart and Luke Altmyer, a two-horse race that still seems like a close one with the season opener just a couple of weeks away.

“I know it sounds the same, they’re very close. I feel like every day you can go out there and say one and the next day say the other. So this will be a tough call, which is a good thing,” Kiffin said.

Kiffin has kept his comments regarding his quarterback competition pretty short throughout fall camp and is continuing to do so. There hasn’t been much talk about any quarterback in the competition taking command or having the upper hand at any moment of camp, which could be a strategic tactic by Kiffin or possibly a sign of uncertainty. Regardless, Kiffin will have to name a starter soon, as the Rebels take on Troy at home in their season opener on September 3.

Lane Kiffin gives surly response to fan attendance, opening up scrimmage to public

Ole Miss opened up their first scrimmage of fall camp to the public this weekend, as Rebel fans came to Vaught-Hemingway Stadium to get a first glimpse of their 2022 team. Head coach Lane Kiffin was asked after the practice if he was happy with the crowd turnout of the scrimmage, and gave an interesting response.

“I don’t know, I’m not really worried about that so I didn’t pay much attention. I mean we opened it up because Kyle wanted you to be nice, so I’m sure everybody filmed today and every opponent has our plays not but you know, we’re just here to be nice to everybody,” Kiffin said.

Kiffin may have been referring to Kyle Campbell, Ole Miss football’s Associate A.D. for Brand Strategy, but it’s clear his main focus is on fall camp, prepping his team for this upcoming season, and keeping his cards close.

Vaught-Hemingway Stadium was special last season, as the Rebels went a perfect 7-0 at home last year. Ole Miss had it’s first sell out crowd since 2017 in their matchup last season versus LSU on Eli Manning day, then followed it a few weeks later with another sold out crowd versus Texas A&M. Kiffin was quoted encouraging his fans to show up for the LSU game last season and make an impact on their home field environment, and surely will want the same thought this season for the Rebels.

Ole Miss announced yesterday that their late season home matchup versus Alabamahas sold out, and their team will definitely be hoping for the same news for future home games this season.
