Ole Miss Football: Lane Kiffin Starting Jaxson Dart at QB? | How will Pete Golding's Defense Look?

Ole Miss’ quarterback battle remains undecided as the Rebels enter game week. Regardless of how it pans out, though, QB Spencer Sanders is ready for what’s coming next for him in Oxford.

Sanders spoke on his fall camp at Ole Miss during a press conference on Tuesday ahead of the program’s opener against Mercer on Saturday. In terms of himself, he feels really good about the strides that he took within the team’s offense and is now ready to see how he will be utilized over the course of the season.

“I feel great,” said Sanders. “Just keep getting better every day. Getting really good with the offense, getting real familiar with it. Just kind of having that natural kind of coordination with it brought me a long way.

“I feel like I’ve excelled in a lot of ways in this offense,” Sanders continued. “I’m excited for what the future holds.”

Sanders is one heck of a college football player in his own right. He left Oklahoma State through the transfer portal this offseason with over 11,500 yards overall and 85 touchdowns in 43 appearances, including 41 starts, with the Cowboys in Stillwater.

However, his case as Ole Miss’ starter got off on the wrong foot as he spent the spring working his way back from injury. By all accounts out of Vaught-Hemingway Stadium, not much has reportedly changed in the race over the course of fall camp.

Jaxson Dart might already be the Rebel’s QB1 and he also might not be yet. The same goes for Sanders as well as Walker Howard as far as we know. Still, as far as his approach, Sanders is just focused on himself, his own personal growth, and how he could positively affect Ole Miss this season, no matter how or when his opportunities come.

Lane Kiffin addresses Ole Miss’ plan at quarterback vs. Mercer

Lane Kiffin is waiting until the last minute to decide who Ole Miss’ starting quarterback will be in 2023.

The favorite is Jaxson Dart, who started a myriad of games for the Rebels last season. Spencer Sanders from Oklahoma State, along with Walker Howard from LSU, are making it into a fascinating battle as well.

On Monday, Kiffin revealed Ole Miss hasn’t made their final decision with week one’s showdown with Mercer looming large on Saturday.

“We’ve not made that final decision,” Kiffin answered. “We’re very excited about all of the guys…Both guys did extremely well. Made explosive plays on Saturday.

“We’re very confident with either of them.”

Kiffin continued by explaining what’s going into the process and why he’s confident in any of the quarterbacks he could go with.

“I just still like to collect information, and still keep practicing. Pushing forward,” added Kiffin. “Like I said, I feel extremely confident in both guys, to win games. Both guys have on big stages. That’s very unusual to have.”

“That’s more like the NFL where you have veterans like that. So I wouldn’t think many people have that. Two guys who have been on the big stage and performed well. So I’m excited.”
