The South Carolina women’s basketball team, led by Dawn Staley, looks like it’s on its way to another national championship. With that, normally, they would be on their way to the White House for a visit. However, there was controversy around whether the Georgia football team would be heading to the White House after winning its championship.

Warren Brinson, a defensive lineman for Georgia, tweeted that Georgia wasn’t getting invited to the White House. Shortly thereafter, the White House did officially invite the Bulldogs.

For her part, Staley downplayed any questions about how to celebrate a potential championship.

“Somebody said something to me about March,” Dawn Staley said. “We’re not interested in March tonight. We have things to do.”

Dawn Staley was asked about this ahead of South Carolina’s final stretch of February games. The regular season isn’t even over yet, so she wants her and her team’s focus to be on the task at hand.

“I don’t think, I mean people are talking about it but, I mean, it’s 2023 now. It’s 2023 now. I don’t–I mean, my focus is on trying to win this game tomorrow night and that’s my only focus and once that’s over, it’s on to Georgia.”

South Carolina went on to beat Georgia, reaching 29-0 during the 2022-23 season.

Dawn Staley on South Carolina’s magical 2023 season

This season has been incredible for South Carolina. It’s also the kind of season that is almost impossible to replicate, as Dawn Staley explained.

“Yeah, no. You can’t recreate this. This is an experienced basketball team; this is a team that the core of this team basically came in together, wanting just to win,” Staley said.

“Obviously, they’ve got goals, individual goals, and they want to do extremely well. But ultimately, the ultimate goal is to win. And I’m happy. We’ve done that a great deal. And some players have gotten their just do. Some players haven’t, just because they’ve sacrificed for the greater good of the team. I just hope that they’re rewarded this year because they sacrificed a great deal for the betterment of our team. And it’s worked, but I like to see them get some individual awards.”
