South Carolina's strengths, weaknesses for each position

The South Carolina offense ended the 2023 season on a high note with Spencer Rattler and the Gamecocks playing well in wins over Tennessee and Clemson, as well as in a close loss to Notre Dame.

But for much of the year, the South Carolina offense was inconsistent, including in ugly losses to Florida and Missouri. Gamecocks coach Shane Beamer joined WCCP Thursday night and shared how he expects the offense to be different under first-year offensive coordinator Dowell Loggains. The former NFL offensive coordinator took over for Marcus Satterfield, who is now at Nebraska.

“I think probably to the naked eye, I don’t know if people would really see or notice a lot of difference in what we did last year and what we’re doing this year,” Beamer said. “Certainly we need to be more consistent than what we’ve been the last two seasons. We’ve been way too up and down. But I think no matter who the offensive coordinator is, defensive coordinator, special teams coordinator, you always want to accentuate the positives and the strengths of your team.”

The passing game is expected to lead the way for the South Carolina offense in 2023 with Rattler and star receiver Juice Wells back.

Wells was a first-team All-SEC selection in 2022 after catching 68 passes for 928 yards and six touchdowns. You can bet that Wells will get plenty of touches this season as he is one of the most dangerous playmakers in the country. As for the running game, South Carolina will look to take a step forward after averaging 119 yards per game last season. That ranked No. 106 nationally.

While the Gamecocks may look similar on offense, it sounds as if there will be some differences as far as how in-depth the playbook is, as well as how plays are called. In about a week, we will get a glimpse of what the offense will look like in 2023 as the Gamecocks open the season against North Carolina.

“Whatever we do really well offensively, let’s continue to build and do that well. Let’s figure out how we can be more consistent offensively this year. If that means streamlining things and trying to be a little bit simpler terminology wise or gameday mechanics – whatever it might be, then great,” Beamer said. “But ultimately we’ve just got to get our quarterback playing at a high level, which is what he did last season at the end of the year. We’ve gotta continue to do that. And then we’ve got to continue to play well around him.”
