The NCAA recently announced a waiver that would allow players to play in a fifth game, so long as it’s after December 15th, without burning their redshirt. This was in response to depth issues on rosters because of players opting out and transferring. For some, like South Carolina’s Luke Doty, this is an excellent opportunity.

Doty explained to reporters how Shane Beamer told him he was good to play in the game and that he’s excited for this opportunity.

“I was pretty fired up about it and, you know, Coach Beamer texted me sometime that night, whenever it came out,” Doty said. “A screenshot of whatever he got that said it had been approved and I’m pretty excited about it.”

For Doty, this is an opportunity that he’s going to take, regardless of how big or small his role will be in the game.

“Any opportunity I get, I’m gonna take it,” Doty said. “So, I don’t know what my role will be if there will be any, but whatever it is, whatever I got to do, I’m always up for it. So, I’m just ready to have some fun out there.”

Doty is a former four-star recruit in the Class of 2020. In that class, he was the seventh-ranked quarterback recruit. This season, he has thrown for 146 yards and two touchdowns.

Luke Doty on his relationship with Spencer Rattler

South Carolina brought in Spencer Rattler, a high-touted recruit, as a transfer to start for the Gamecocks. Now, Doty opened up about his relationship with Rattler.

“I mean, I think he’s done everything like a pro. You know, the way that he handled things when he first got here, how we went through camp, and really how we went through the season. You know, me and him got pretty tight just coming in every single day from the beginning of the week, Monday to Friday, in the hotel. You know, we both felt like we always had a great game plan that we were ready and prepared for whoever we were facing during the week,” Doty said.

“So just being able to go through that with him. And him helping me out and me helping him out, that’s something that I’m never gonna forget and I’ve got his back no matter what,” Doty said. “And I know he has mine. So like I said, whatever happens he’s gonna do great, he’s gonna be awesome in the bowl game, and we’re just gonna go out there have some fun and make plays.”
