Shane Beamer previews Vanderbilt | South Carolina Gamecocks

It’s been a frustrating season for Shane Beamer and the South Carolina Gamecocks, despite getting excellent quarterback play from Spencer Rattler. His play has led to NFL scouts taking notice and hanging around the program.

Following South Carolina’s win over Jacksonville State, Beamer shared a conversation that he recently had with one of those scouts about Rattler.

“He’s been awesome,” Shane Beamer said. “We had one of the main scouts or personnel people for the Denver Broncos was here today and he asked me the same question. I was like, ‘Guy has been phenomenal.’”

In particular, Shane Beamer praised Spencer Rattler for his leadership throughout the season.

“If anybody was in a position to voice frustrations about something it would be him because he has been sacked a lot. He has been hit a lot. We’ve had offensive linemen hurt. We have had his all-conference receiver from last year out all year. But never once has he.”

Coming out of high school, Spencer Rattler was one of the best recruits in the country. According to the On3 Industry Rankings, Rattler was a five-star recruit in the Class of 2019. So, he has all the raw talent in the world.

Rattler started his college career at Oklahoma before transferring to South Carolina. Through nine games this season, Rattler has completed 69.7 percent of passes for 2,516 yards and 14 touchdowns.

“He is just steady and consistent. He has done a great job of lifting up those young linemen that are protecting him and helping. Lifting up Nyckoles Harbor and continuing to bring them along. Tyshawn Russell, another freshman receiver. He has done a really good job of elevating the people around him throughout the team and just being steady and consistent,” Beamer said.

“When things are good or bad, all eyes are going to be, typically, on the head coach and the quarterback. He knows that. If anything, the way that he has handled things this season has helped him in my mind with the NFL when his time is up, for sure.”

Spencer Rattler continues to impress Senior Bowl director Jim Nagy

Beyond just NFL scouts, Spencer Rattler has also managed to impress Jim Nagy, the director of the Senior Bowl.

“It is a loaded quarterback class for the 2024 Reese’s Senior Bowl. In South Carolina, Spencer Rattler will be squarely in the mix for an invite. He’s one of the best pure pocket passers in this year’s class. If you give him time, he will absolutely pick you apart. He can rip NFL throws down the field, as we’ve seen him do all season to Xavier Legette,” Nagy said.

“I think the issue for Spencer this year is he’s faced a lot of fast pressure, particularly off the edges, that’s made him move. But for NFL evaluators, that’s been a good thing. I think they’ve seen more mobility out of Spencer. He’s gonna enter the draft process with over 40 career starts at the college level, which is huge. And he’s got some big games still left on the schedule, including [this past Saturday] against a Missouri defense that has a lot of NFL talent on it, where he can prove to NFL scouts that he is a starter at the next level.”
