Texas now finds itself in the elimination bracket after a 7-3 loss to Notre Dame on Friday night. The Fighting Irish had everything going — and David Pierce saw some things the Longhorns need to fix before Sunday’s game.

Pierce met the media after the loss and mentioned Pete Hansen’s performance on the mound. He threw 4.1 innings and allowed nine hits and six runs while striking out five Notre Dame hitters. That, coupled with good pitching from Notre Dame, led to the defeat.

“I thought Notre Dame played really well, and they pitched really well,” Pierce said. “Pete struggled just getting to really arm side. And when he tried to go there, the ball was cut on him. But he competed. He just had way too much traffic and too many things happening that we just couldn’t overcome. We kind of minimized them to the one inning.

“And offensively they did a great job of just pitching hard in with both fastball and cutter and then mixing the change-up and occasional fastball away. So they deserved to win. I thought they were better than us tonight. And we’ll regroup, practice tomorrow, and bounce back before a Sunday game.”

Texas now gets ready to take on rival Texas A&M in the elimination bracket, hoping to keep its College World Series hopes alive. First pitch for that game is set for June 19 at 2 p.m. ET on ESPN as both teams try to avoid their second loss.

Details set for College World Series elimination game between Texas, Texas A&M

Day One of the College World Series is complete and the first elimination game is set to take place on Sunday at 1 p.m. CT. All games in Omaha mean a lot but this one will have a little more juice than usual thanks to an in-state rivalry.

Texas and Texas A&M will be the two opponents, as the long-time Lone Star State rivals will once again battle it out. While most know — and love — the football rivalry, the one on the baseball diamond is just as intense and will be at its peak on Sunday. Winner will get to advance and face the loser of the Notre Dame vs. Oklahoma winner’s bracket matchup, while the loser will pack their bags and go back home.

Shortly after the conclusion of the nightcap, the NCAA announced Texas A&M will be the home team.
