Former Alabama tight end Amari Niblack has committed to Texas out of the transfer portal, he announced Thursday night on Instagram. He will have multiple years of eligibility remaining.

After appearing in seven games as a true freshman, Niblack stepped into a much bigger role in 2023 for the Crimson Tide as a sophomore. He played in all 14 games and caught 20 passes for 327 yards and four touchdowns. He was a consistent down-the-field threat, averaging more than 15 yards per reception in an Alabama passing game that was, at times, limited during the season.

Niblack played high school football at Lakewood (Fla.) High School, where he was a four-star prospect. He was the No. 89 overall recruit in the 2022 cycle, according to the On3 Industry Ranking, a weighted average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies.

More on Texas’ 2024 transfer class

The Longhorns and head coach Steve Sarkisian have assembled a strong group of players in the transfer portal this cycle, and Niblack marks the third from Alabama. Texas has also brought in wide out Isaiah Bond and linebacker Kendrick Blackshire from the Crimson Tide.

And a remake of the wide receiving corps. has been undertaken, with Bond being joined by Silas Bolden from Oregon State and Matthew Golden from Houston as new additions for the Longhorns wideout room.

On defense, Austin native Andrew Mukuba transferred from Clemson and will slot in at safety. And one of the most coveted edge rushers in the portal this cycle, UTSA’s Trey Moore, will be playing in burnt orange come fall.

All told, Texas is bringing in seven transfers with the addition of Niblack to the transfer class.

Niblack’s departure was also part of an exodus for Alabama after the retirement of Nick Saban. Since the end of the season, spurred on by Saban’s decision, dozens of players have chosen to look elsewhere.

Texas, by virtue of Sarkisian’s ties to the Crimson Tide — he was their offensive coordinator as recently as 2020 — and the Texas ties for some Alabama players, has been in a distinct position to benefit from the exodus in Tuscaloosa.

And with more Alabama players potentially entering the portal and looking for new homes, Texas and Sarkisian might keep adding.
