Something big is brewing in Lubbock.

Five-star defensive lineman Jalen Brewster has committed to the Red Raiders as they build out an absolutely star-studded recruiting class featuring several prominent blue-chip prospects, particularly in the trenches.

Brewster’s commitment to Texas Tech came two days after the No. 1 DL in the 2027 class celebrated his birthday.

Since June, the No. 6 overall prospect in the Rivals300 from Cedar Hill (Texas) High School has visited each of his top contenders, including Tech. Midway through his fall visit tour, Brewster pulled the trigger to be a part of the Red Raiders are building out in West Texas.

“It’s time to reunite with Coach McGuire,” Brewster told Rivals.

“I’ve been to really every school and I’ve seen everything I’ve needed to see. I think it’s time,” he added on the decision-making process. “This is also my birthday week and this has been a dream for a long time.”

The Cedar Hill connection between Brewster and Texas Tech head coach Joey McGuire also loomed incredibly large in this process. McGuire helped the Longhorns capture three high school state football championships at the helm before moving onto the college ranks and eventually Lubbock.

Brewster’s father Robert Brewster played at Ball State and in the NFL, and deferred to his son in making this decision.

“Coach McGuire … he used to be my coach at high school, so I’ve had that connection,” Brewster told Rivals’ Hayes Fawcett. “It’s all been love every time I go up to Lubbock. I’m looking forward to being in the atmosphere. I’ve never been there for a game, so I want to see how the atmosphere is.”

Brewster will be immersed in that game-day environment again next Saturday (October 11) when Texas Tech hosts Kansas in a Big 12 showdown.

Red Raiders have a class filled with No. 1s

Texas Tech’s 2027 class was sitting inside the top 10 leading into the weekend — before Brewster’s commitment.

The No. 1 DL in the cycle on board in Brewster, a prospect that a prominent DL coach involved in this recruitment projected as a future top-10 draft pick.

Others in the know compared the No. 6 overall player in the Rivals300 to Jalen Carter, who was drafted No. 9 overall in the 2023 NFL Draft. Another established coach called Brewster “a freaking monster” with elite explosiveness and the motor to “play hard every snap.”

Brewster joins Texas Tech’s 2027 class highlighted by No. 1 EDGE LaDamion Guyton, who’s also the top prospect in the Rivals300 out of Savannah (Ga.) Benedictine. In-state blue-chipper K’Adrian Redmond also declared for the Red Raiders last month. Rivals’ No. 14 DL out of DeSoto (Texas) High, Redmond was widely coveted by Power 4 programs across the state.

The Red Raiders are still vying for multiple No. 1 prospects at their position, including elite QB Kavian Bryant, who is also eyeing an in-season decision. Texas Tech is leading Colorado, Florida State and others on the Rivals RPM.
