Four Downs: Previewing USC at Notre Dame

When Max Williams went down with an injury against Notre Dame in the first quarter, fellow defensive back Bryson Shaw was there to console him. Williams was ruled out of the game and was a big loss for the USC secondary. But now, Shaw is the one dealing with a problem as the second half continues to tick away in South Bend.

Shaw was in the medical tent at one point, dealing with a thigh injury. He was not on the field when Notre Dame blew the top off the USC defense, scoring on a long touchdown. To this point, Shaw has not gotten back onto the field and the Trojans are going even deeper on their depth chart.

“We got some injury issues for the USC secondary,” NBC’s Ahmed Fareed said during a sideline report. “We saw Max Williams leave the game in the first quarter and his replacement, Bryson Shaw was in the tent, getting his left thigh retaped. He was not on the field for that 46-yard touchdown to Chris Tyree. So, they’re thin in the secondary, are the Trojans, for the rest of the game.”

If Shaw does not have the ability to get back in the game, USC is going to have a tough time mounting the already daunting comeback. Alex Grinch’s unit is going to need everybody available in order to keep the Notre Dame defense slowed down. If the secondary keeps losing players to injury, another big play is going to break at some point.

USC loses Max Williams to first quarter injury vs. Notre Dame

The unfortunate injury night for the USC secondary began in the first quarter with Williams. You could immediately tell his injury was a serious one, showing pain once a play was over. Eventually, Williams was brought to the locker room and the emotions were showing on his face.

Just a heartbreaking moment for somebody who has struggled with injuries over the last couple of seasons.

“He was putting no weight on his right leg,” the NBC broadcast said early in the first half. “He spent about seven minutes inside of the tent. His fellow safety, Bryson Shaw, went in to check on him. He walked out, Williams did, seven minutes later without his helmet.

“He was then assisted off the field. An emotional scene, tears running down his cheek. It appears unlikely that Williams will play again today.”
