Upper Marlboro (Md.) Charles Herbert Flowers four-star EDGE Obinna Onwuka has announced his commitment to West Virginia. He chose the Mountaineers over Boston College, USC, Virginia Tech and Wisconsin among others.

Onwuka is the No. 376 overall prospect and No. 27 EDGE in the 2024 cycle, according to the On3 Industry Ranking, a weighted average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies. He is also the No. 13 player in Maryland.

On3 rates Onwuka higher than other recruiting services, according to the Industry Comparison. Even though he is not ranked in the 2024 On300, Onwuka is the No. 26 EDGE in the country and No. 7 player in Maryland.

The 6-foot-4, 225-pound pass rusher is now the fourth member of West Virginia’s 2024 recruiting class. Ranson (W.V.) Jefferson three-star wide receiver Keyshawn Robinson, Philadelphia (Penn.) Camden three-star defensive lineman Wink James Jr. and Cincinnati (Ohio) Walnut Hills three-star tight end Jack Sammarco are the others.

Prior to Onwuka’s decision, the Mountaineers’ group ranked No. 69 in the 2024 On3 Industry Team Recruiting Rankings and No. 10 in the Big 12. He took an official visit to West Virginia on the weekend of June 3.

West Virginia landed two four-stars last cycle

Last cycle, West Virginia’s class finished No. 51 in the 2023 On3 Industry Team Recruiting Rankings and No. 9 in the Big 12. Head coach Neal Brown and his staff landed signatures from 19 high school players.

Two of them were four-stars: Uniontown (Penn.) Laurel Highlands wide reciever Rodney Gallagher and Tallahassee (Fla.) North Florida Christian wide receiver Traylon Ray. Both were ranked in the top-350 of the 2023 On3 Industry Ranking.

“The future is bright in Morgantown under coach Brown,” Gallagher told On3’s Chad Simmons on May 25, 2022. “Coach Brown has done a great job, he has great guys around him, and they are bringing some studs in, in this 2023 class. Since he started recruiting me when I was a freshman, coach Brown has been the same guy. He is genuine, he is like family, and we are about to do something special at West Virginia.”

“The fit is great for me at West Virginia,” he added. “From the mental side, my family will be close. And with football, they will give me a chance to showcase my skills. The people are great, they pass the ball around, and the future is bright. I know I found my fit.”
