Eli Holstein makes early return from injury, efficiently leads Zachary to win

Sam SpiegelmanNational Recruiting Analyst

After sustaining an injury to his non-throwing shoulder on Sept. 16, doctors told On3 Consensus top-100 QB Eli Holstein that he'd be sidelined at least a month and up to six weeks. On the 20-day mark, Holstein suited up and started for defending Louisiana 5A champion Zachary and didn't skip a beat. With a heavy emphasis on running the ball and getting it out of Holstein's hands quickly, the Alabama commit completed 15-of-18 passes with 2 TD and took some massive hits from a smothering Woodlawn defensive front four that brought pressure throughout. Holstein was efficient and connected on two touchdowns and converted several first-downs with his legs. The 6-foot-4, 230-pounder was not at 100 percent, but didn't blink orchestrating the gameplan after absorbing hits in and outside the pocket. He plays with a different sort of demeanor.

Eli Holstein has up and down week at Elite 11 Finals

Charles Power

Eli Holstein got off to a shaky start in 7-on-7 on Thursday, coming out a bit too wired. The Alabama commit threw a few balls up for grabs, but was able to settle down and ended with one of the better sessions on the day. Holstein completed 13 of his final 14 passes to finish 13 of 18 with three touchdowns. The finish to his 7-on-7 session was the high point of the week for the 6-foot-3, 230-pounder. Holstein will need to continue refining his mechanics and tightening his motion, but he showed the ability to drive the ball with velocity while throwing against live defenses. The Crimson Tide commit edges into the final top 11 due to his complete showing while throwing against live defenders, when compared with many of the other Finalists. Holstein struggled some during his pro day workout on Day 2, but showed a bit of a rebound with his 7-on-7 showing.

Eli Holstein senior spring game

Sam SpiegelmanNational Recruiting Analyst

After a stellar junior campaign, Holstein capped the strong with even more momentum. The 6-foot-4, 225-pounder was magnificent airing it out during the Zachary (La.) spring game in front of Alabama offensive coordinator Bill O’Brien and LSU quarterbacks coach Joe Sloan. Holstein was sharp attacking downfield and made a handful of plays with his legs either extending a play or taking off in the open field. Always aggressive attacking downfield, Holstein was even more efficient this outing and turned heads in the process. He’s giving me Andrew Luck vibes after this spring.
