Five-Star Plus+ guard Brandon McCoy transferring to Sierra Canyon (Calif.)

Another five-star high school basketball prospect is on the move ahead of his senior season.

California combo guard Brandon McCoy, the No. 2 overall prospect in the 2026 cycle — according to the Rivals Industry Ranking — is transferring from St. John Bosco to Sierra Canyon, according to Hoops HQ’s Krysten Peek.

McCoy has continued to see his stock rise throughout his high school career and he’s now headed to one of the more infamous prep hoops programs in the nation. Sierra Canyon has produced NBA draft picks like Marvin Bagley, Ziaire Williams, Brandon Boston Jr., Cassius Stanley, Amari Bailey and Bronny James.

As a junior for St. John Bosco, a notable Golden State program in its own right, McCoy averaged 15.9 points and 6.7 rebounds in limited action. He’s also dominated the summer camp circuit and helped guide Team USA to a gold medal at the FIBA U19s. Last month at Peach Jam, he averaged 22 points, 6.4 rebounds, 1.4 assists and a steal per game, shooting nearly 59 percent from the field and 33 percent from deep.

Sierra Canyon, always a contender for a CIF State title, is now certainly among the nation’s top programs heading into the 2025-26 campaign. McCoy will team up with high four-star small forward Maximo Adams and three-star forward Brannon Martinsen, among others. The Trailblazers won the CIF Division I title last season behind Adams, Bryce Cofield and Bryce James.

McCoy remains uncommitted and has not made serious strides toward a commitment ahead of his senior year. Duke was a program that held the early momentum in his process, while the likes of Alabama, Kansas, Michigan and USC have also been mentioned. McCoy is one of just two prospects in the 2026 cycle that have landed five-star status via Rivals’ Jamie Shaw — who wrote this of the star guard earlier this month:

“McCoy joined (Tyran) Stokes with USA Basketball this summer, earning their third consecutive gold medal together. McCoy missed a majority of the high school season and all of the spring travel season, making his return with USA Basketball. McCoy played a team-low 9.6 minutes per game with USA Basketball, but the 6-foot-4 guard showed himself to still possibly be the top on-ball defender in the 2026 recruiting cycle.

Playing in July with the Arizona Unity team, McCoy averaged 19.7 points on 55.7 percent shooting and 2.8 STOCKS. McCoy was a terror getting into the paint, scoring 1.093 points per possession. He was quickly able to turn defense into offense, guarding full court and making life for the opposing ball handler uncomfortable. He also consistently put the defense on their heels, collapsing the team and making a play.”
