Alabama High School Football Rankings: Top 25 Teams - Oct. 20

In less than three weeks, the 2025 Alabama high school football playoffs will begin. Many teams will play their final regular season game this week.
The Massey Ratings have once again updated and Clay-Chalkville is back in the No. 1 slot. Thompson, which previously crept back up to the top spot last week, lost to No. 8 Hoover. Just four teams in the top 25 remain undefeated.
Three ranked matchups will go down this Friday. Below are the top 25 teams in Alabama after week nine, according to the Massey Ratings.
1. Clay-Chalkville Cougars (9-0)
Senior quarterback Aaron Frye continues to deliver for Clay-Chalkville down the stretch. In a 40-16 victory over Oxford, Frye rushed for 104 yards and three touchdowns while also throwing for 229 yards and another score. The performance helped the Cougars, now the No. 43 team in the nation, cruise to their ninth win of the year. They have a marquee win under their belt and continue to take care of business down the stretch. 3-5 Pinson Valley will look to spoil their perfect regular season this week.
2. Central Red Devils (8-1)
Central has leaned on its run game down the stretch this season and that was evident in its 42-6 thumping of No. 11 Opelika last week. Junior running back Jayshaun Woodhouse toted the rock 24 times and racked up 284 yards and three scores. Junior QB Bobby Coleman had two more touchdown throws and also rushed for a TD in the big win. The Red Devils are right behind Clay-Chalkville as the No. 46 team nationally and will close their regular season against lowly JAG this week.
3. Thompson Warriors (6-3)
Thompson suffered heartbreak on Friday night as Hoover kicker James Bryant nailed a game-winning 55-yard field goal as time expired to propel his Buccaneers past the Warriors, 33-30. Thompson junior QB and brand-new Alabama commit Trent Seaborn threw for 272 yards and two touchdowns while also rushing for a score in the defeat. Star junior defensive lineman Cam Pritchett had a team-best 10 tackles. Thompson is now stunningly 6-3 and will now try to enter the postseason on a high note. It takes on No. 15 Prattville this Friday.
4. Saraland Spartans (8-0)
Saraland head coach Jeff Kelly notched his 200th career victory last week as his Spartans blanked Murphy 55-0 to remain undefeated. Junior quarterback Jamison Roberts threw for five touchdowns on just eight completions in the victory. Saraland hasn’t been tested in some time, but it’ll close the regular season with two tough matchups against Theodore this week and then No. 12 Carver on Oct. 30.
5. Hewitt-Trussville Huskies (7-2)
After eating its first two losses of the season in back-to-back games, Hewitt-Trussville got back on the horse last week, fighting past Oak Mountain 36-21. Four different Huskies rushed for a touchdown in the win. Senior QB Zach Benedict had one of the rushing scores and also threw for 198 yards, a touchdown and an interception. Hewitt-Trussville will be a tough out in the postseason and it’ll get a playoff tune-up this week as it takes on winless Tuscaloosa County this week.
6. Vestavia Hills Rebels (6-2)
Speaking of Tuscaloosa County, Vestavia Hills showed no mercy last week in a 56-10 victory over the Wildcats. The Rebels piled on 42 first-quarter points and rushed for seven touchdowns in total. Five different players had a TD in the lopsided win. They now get to face No. 8 Hoover, which is coming off its biggest win of the season. The Rebels then close the regular season against Montgomery Catholic Prep on Oct. 30.
7. Auburn Tigers (7-2)
In perhaps its most impressive performance of the season, Auburn boat raced No. 12 Carver 41-7. As usual, junior quarterback Cason Myers led the way. He threw for 271 yards and four touchdowns. The receiving trio of Cash Reif, Antonio Welch and Joshua Askew combined for 14 receptions and 243 yards. The Tigers now have four ranked victories this season and close their regular season this week against 5-3 Dothan, a top-30 team in the state.

8. Hoover Buccaneers (6-3)
Not only did Hoover’s James Bryant drill a game-winning 55-yarder to beat then-No. 1 Thompson, the kicker made four field goals totaling 152 yards. After starting the season 1-3 with all three defeats coming at home, the Buccaneers have now won five in a row and the offense seems to be clicking heading into the playoffs. They’ve already played six ranked in-state foes and also IMG Academy, the top-ranked team in Florida. One more for good measure is set to come this week as Hoover takes on No. 6 Vestavia Hills.
9. Williamson Lions (8-0)
Playing its first ranked matchup of the season, Williamson conquered then-No. 18 Vigor in a tight overtime battle between two undefeated programs. The Lions cemented themselves as the top team in 5A and will be the frontrunner to win a state title. They’ll close their regular season out against LeFlore this Friday. Williamson is now averaging over 53 points per game.
10. Mary G Montgomery (8-1)
Mary G Montgomery is no longer among the state’s unbeatens as it lost 43-28 to No. 25 Baker last week. The Vikings allowed four passing touchdowns in the defeat while senior QB Jeremy Menhennett threw for 232 yards, one touchdown and an interception. Carson Headrick had 113 receiving yards and a score in the loss. MGM will take on WP Davidson this week before heading into postseason play.
