In the battle of Alabama high school football’s No. 1-2 teams, it would be Thompson stonewalling Phenix City Central on the road to move on to the AHSAA Class 7A state championship game.

The Warriors made a crucial 2-point conversion stop in the game’s final minutes to hold on for a thrilling 35-34 victory on the road over the Red Devils Friday night. Thompson moves on to the Class 7A final against Opelika, a 31-28 winner over Auburn.

Thompson nearly blew a 35-14 lead after Urijah Casey scored on a 53-yard touchdown run early in the fourth quarter, with Phenix City Central scoring 20 unanswered points in the final period.

Warriors’ defensive back Damonte Tabb led the defensive effort, picking off three interceptions on the night.
