Bishop Montgomery (Calif.) officially posts vacant football HC position
Following one of the more tumultuous high school football seasons for any program in the country, the Bishop Montgomery Knights (Calif.) have officially posted the head football coaching position for those to apply if interested.
The school has posted the varsity head coaching job for the Knights’ football program, after a season that saw Bishop Montgomery have to part ways with longtime head coach Ed Hodgkiss.
Per the listing, the job pays between $35,000-$50,000 and whomever goes for the position would need prior head coaching experience or equivalent to that. Below is an excerpt that was taken from Bishop Montgomery’s job summary for the Knights’ head football coaching position.
The Head Varsity Football Coach at Bishop Montgomery High School leads a mission-aligned, competitive football program rooted in Catholic faith and values. Serving under the Principal and Athletic Director, the coach models a lived relationship with Jesus Christ, fosters the spiritual and personal formation of student-athletes, and upholds the standards of Bishop Montgomery.
During the 2025 season, Bishop Montgomery fired Hodgkiss after the Knights were forced to forfeit their Week 1 matchup against Mater Dei for not having enough players. Hodgkiss was named Bishop Montgomery’s head coach in 2010 and was in his 16th season as the Knights head coach, compiling a record of 84-69-1. He led the Knights to league titles in 2010, 2014, 2015, 2016 and 2018.

The Knights’ forfeit to Mater Dei was one issue from a series of early season tumultuous moments for the Bishop Montgomery football program. More than 20 of the team’s incoming transfers were ruled ineligible over the offseason by the CIF Southern Section for breaking Bylaw 202, which is listed by the association as ‘Penalty for Providing Incorrect, Inaccurate, Incomplete or False Information.’
