Bishop Montgomery cancels 2025 season after tumultuous start

Bishop Montgomery (Calif.) canceled its 2025 football season on Tuesday. The news comes on the heels of a tumultuous August in which the Knights had five transfers ruled ineligible, saw several players suspended for their involvement in a postgame altercation after their Week 1 loss to St. Louis, forfeited their Week 2 matchup against No. 1 Mater Dei and fired head coach Ed Hodgkiss.
Sports Illustrated’s Tarek Fattal was first to report the news.
Hodgkiss, a former AFL head coach, had led Bishop Montgomery’s football program since 2010. He coached the Knights to five league titles in his 16 seasons and amassed an 84-69-1 record.
The sudden cancelation of the season likely means that the prep careers of several top FBS prospects are suddenly over. Barring some kind of waiver, seniors Christian Davis (Sacramento State), Victor Santino (Cal) and Caleb Tafua (Texas A&M) have all played their final high school football game.
The Bishop Montgomery roster also includes prospects in the junior and sophomore classes that will be negatively affected by the lack of game and practice reps this fall. Junior defensive lineman George Toia already has over a dozen Power Four offers but others, such as quarterback Kane Anetema, were likely counting on sending 2025 game film to college recruiters.

The Knights were scheduled to visit No. 30 Leuzinger on Friday. That game, along with Bishop Montgomery’s games against Hart, Pacifica, St. Genevieve, St. Monica Catholic, Don Bosco Technical Institute, St. Bernard and Mary Star of the Sea will be ruled a forfeit.
