California High School Football Games of the Week: Aug. 28-30

The first week of the California high school football season is in the books. While there were winners and losers, the beauty of sports is that there’s always a next game. Here are the top five matchups on this weekend’s slate.

No. 4 Centennial at No. 8 Santa Margarita Catholic

When: Friday, Aug. 29, 10 p.m. ET
Where: Trabuco Hills High School Football Stadium, Mission Viejo, Calif.

The Huskies opened the 2025 California high school football season with a 42-14 victory over Servite. They will visit Santa Margarita Catholic, a team looking to bounce back after a 7-3 loss to Mission Viejo. These two teams last met on in 2023, with Centennial winning on the road 34-21.

Massey Prediction: Centennial 34, Santa Margarita Catholic 22

No. 7 Folsom at No. 24 Junipero Serra

When: Saturday, Aug. 30, 4 p.m. ET
Where: Freitas Field at Brady Family Stadium, San Mateo, California

After an emphatic season-opening victory against Grant Union, Folsom will visit Junipero Serra, who will be starting the California high school football season against the Bulldogs. The two teams competed last year, with the Padres carving a one-point win. However, Massey sees this year’s rematch as a one-sided affair.

Massey Prediction: Folsom 41, Junipero Sera 14

No. 17 Murrieta Valley at No. 14 Servite

When: Friday, Aug. 29, 10 p.m. ET
Where: Cerritos College, Cerritos, California

The Friars are still searching for their first victory this season after losing to Centennial in their season opener. They will now host Murrieta Valley, a team that edged Rancho Cucamonga to open the 2025 California high school football season. Last year, Servite defeated the Nighthawks on the road 37-17. While this could be a competitive game, Servite is predicted to earn a repeat victory.

No. 16 Oakridge at No. 32 Mission Hills

When: Friday, Aug. 29, 10 p.m. ET
Where: Jack Ashby Field at Grizzly Stadium, San Marcos, California

The Grizzlies and the Trojans were impressive in their respective season openers. Mission Hills completed a 31-0 shutout victory over Quartz Hill, while Oakridge completed a 40-7 domination of Frontier. While Mission Hills will host Oakridge, Massey predicts a victory for the visitors.

No. 15 Cathedral Catholic at No. 33 St. Francis

When: Friday, Aug. 29, 10 p.m. ET
Where: Brother Fisher Field at Ron Calcagno Stadium, Mountain View, California

The Dons started the 2025 California high school football season with a convincing 52-7 victory over Mater Dei Catholic. They will travel to Mountain View to face St. Francis, a team that ready to start its fall campaign. While Cathedral Catholic has a higher ranking, the Lancers are no pushover, making it a potentially tight matchup.
