For the second time this California high school football season, No. 8 Centennial was able to get one over on No. 6 Mater Dei. This time, it was for a trip to the Rose Bowl and it’s the grand daddy of them all.

Dominick Catalano threw the go-ahead 24-yard touchdown pass to Keawe Brown, with the Huskies’ defense holding on for a thrilling 28-27 victory over the Monarchs (10-3) on Friday night in a CIF Southern Section Division I semifinal.

Centennial (12-1) moves on to the CIF Southern Section Division I final to face likely Santa Margarita Catholic, who was leading Orange Lutheran late in the second half.

The last CIF Southern Section Division I, which was then called Pac-5 Division, high school football final without Mater Dei or St. John Bosco was in 2011, when Santa Margarita Catholic defeated San Clemente, 27-13, in Anaheim.
