California High School Football Top 25 Rankings - Sept. 1

The high school football season continued in California last week, as many of the Golden State’s top programs were in action. Plenty of interesting results followed.
Another jam-packed slate is on deck as teams continue their quests for state championships. Below are the top 25 high school football teams in California, according to the Massey Ratings, as of Sept. 1.
1. Mater Dei Monarchs
The Monarchs improved to 2-0 after their scheduled opponent, Bishop Montgomery, forfeited the game due to a lack of available players. However, even if the game was played, there’s little doubt that Mater Dei’s superiority and roster depth would lead to a dominant victory. The best team in high school football will host Kahuku (Hawaii) on Sept. 5.
2. St. John Bosco Braves
After a season-opening shutout victory over Manatee, the Braves followed up with a dominating 66-7 victory against Eastwood. Sophomore quarterback Koa Malau’ulu threw for 137 passing yards and three touchdowns, and added another score on the ground. On defense, St. John Bosco tallied eight tackles for losses and four sacks. California high school football’s second-best team will look to maintain its perfect record against Maryland’s St. Frances Academy on Sept. 5.
3. Mission Viejo Diablos
Last week, the Diablos engaged in a low-scoring battle against Santa Margarita Catholic. They followed it up with a high-scoring win over St. Paul. Mission Viejo scored 59 points in the victory, led by Ohio State commit Luke Fahey’s four touchdowns (three passing, one rushing). Jack Junker (117 receiving yards, one touchdown) and KJ Woodbury Jr (123 receiving yards, one touchdown) added to the onslaught. The Diablos will aim for a 3-0 record against Folsom on Sept. 5.
4. Sierra Canyon Trailblazers
The Trailblazers haven’t given up points two games into the 2025 California high school football season. After a 35-0 victory over JSerra Catholic, Sierra Canyon completed a 63-0 shutout win against Oaks Christian. Quarterback Laird Finkel threw for two touchdowns, while four players combined for five rushing touchdowns. Meanwhile, their defense generated three sacks and nine tackles for losses. After playing on the road, the Trailblazers will return home against Hawaii’s Punahou on Sept. 5.
5. Orange Lutheran Lancers
The Lancers have been at the winning end of some close games. After a two-point victory against Miami’s Northwestern, Orange Lutheran escaped with a three-point win over Rancho Cucamonga. They hope to remain undefeated after visiting Arizona’s Basha on Sept. 5.
