The Archbishop Spalding Cavaliers stamped their dominance in Maryland high school football after defeating the McDonogh Eagles last season. That victory capped off a perfect 12-0 campaign, which earned the Cavaliers their third consecutive MIAA Class A state championship.

No one came close to defeating the Cavaliers as they shut down eight opponents and limited two more to single-digit points. They were still winning by double digits even if they gave up at least ten points, which happened in their first two games.

Likewise, that finish has coach Kyle Schmitt’s crew clinching their third straight double-digit win season. In addition to their 33-3 record since 2022, their 12-0 finish placed them tenth in the National On3 Composite Rankings.

Since Archbishop Spalding is the team to beat, can they complete another undefeated season? More importantly, will they have the firepower to lift another state trophy? The answers to these questions become clearer as the Cavaliers go through their 2025 game schedule.

Maryland’s best high school football team will have ten regular-season games, split evenly between home and away. They will open the season on August 22 at Brownsburg, Indiana’s top-ranked team last year. The Bulldogs had a 13-1 season, capped off by their first state championship since 1985.

Meanwhile, their other away games will be at McDonogh (September 12), Gilman (September 26), Concordia Prep (October 11), and Loyola Blakefield (October 24). Archbishop Spalding defeated these teams last season with a combined score of 185-10.

Conversely, the Cavaliers will have their home opener on August 30 in the Cavalier Classic match against Archbishop Hoban. While the Knights are Ohio’s fourth-best team, the Cavaliers defeated them during their 2024 season opener.

A week later, Archbishop Spalding will host the Hun School Raiders, New Jersey’s ninth-best team. Their remaining home games are against Calvert Hall (September 19), St. Mary’s (October 3 – Homecoming), and Mount Saint Joseph (October 31 – Senior Night). None of these teams scored against the Cavaliers last season.
