Clay-Chalkville upends No. 12 Thompson in Thursday night stunner

If you thought that upsets on the national level ended with the flurry of last week’s surprises, think again.
Thursday night continued what has become a weekly occurrence when it comes to stunning losses for nationally ranked teams. Clay-Chalkville (Ala.) used a strong fourth quarter push and upended No. 12 ranked Thompson (Ala.) in a 28-24 victory at Jerry Hood Field.
What looked like a game well at hand for the Warriors at intermission was anything but in the final two quarters of play. Thompson (4-2) entered the halftime break up 21-7, looking in full control of the contest against undefeated Clay-Chalkville (6-0) and in the third quarter is when the Cougars would come storming back into the contest.
The Cougars got to within a touchdown on a defensive score when lineman Colton McIntyre return a Trent Seaborn turnover to pay dirt. Trailing 21-14, Clay-Chalkville began to believe they could make a comeback.
Looking to pin the Cougars deep, Thompson’s defense looked primed and ready to stop Clay-Chalkville from scoring again. All the Cougars did was generate a 99-yard drive, capping it off with a Corey Barber touchdown run to tie things up at 21-all.

Thompson retook the lead with just over seven minutes to go on a Ethan Black 19-yard field goal to go up 24-21. The Warriors’ defense needed to make another stop in order to win on the road, but it would be the Cougars’ offense once again finding a way.
Clay-Chalkville took the lead for good when Barber scored on a 10-yard grab, capping a 21-3 run in the second half for the Cougars en route to the upset win.
