Delaware high school football coach suspended after team's unsportsmanlike act
A Delaware high school football coach was suspended for two games after his team’s actions following a victory.
In a report by WDEL’s Sean Greene, Brandywine High School coach Isaiah Mays will serve his suspension to start the 2026-27 season after his players destroyed the football field at Concord High School last November 8.
In addition to the suspension which Mays and Brandywine can appeal, the coach could serve a one-year probation and attend a Sportsmanship Course by the National Federation of State High School Associations.
While the Bulldogs won the game against their rivals, 22-7, they celebrated by tearing off the grass while posing for a picture, as shown in this Instagram post by the team’s photographer. According to the Delaware Interscholastic Athletic Association, Brandywine violated the following rules:
- 1023 1.2.1 – Failing to uphold good sportsmanship
- 1023 1.2.1.5.2.1 – Demonstrating desirable behavior
- 1023 1.2.1.5.2.10 – Coaches must look after their player’s actions
- 1023 1.2.1.5.3.7 – Respective host school’s facilities
In a letter sent by Concord principal Jeff Lawson to Brandywine principal Rebecca Reggio, the former claimed that around 10 to 15 players dug up the grass at the 50-yard line using their cleats. The damage was so severe that Concord is considering repairs before the next season.
