The Maryville Rebels, the No. 13 ranked team in Tennessee high school football, will be in search for a new head football coach this off-season.

According to a report by the Knoxville News Sentinel, Derek Hunt is stepping down after nine seasons at the helm. During his near decade as the program’s head coach, Hunt compiled an overall record of 106-18 and led Maryville to two state championships in 2017 and 2019.

“I won’t be coaching football for the Rebels next season,” Hunt said via a statement through the Knoxville News Sentinel. “As much as I love being around our coaches and players, I’ve got a team at home that needs their coach now more than ever. I look forward to being a more present father, husband and son.”

“I’ve loved working for all our administrators, ADs and Director Mike Winstead. Our coaches, players, teachers and fans are incredible. I will miss you all to death. I will always be Maryville’s biggest fan, and the football program’s future is extremely bright.”

Per the report, Maryville athletics director Landon Harris is looking to have a new head football coach in place by the time winter break begins.

This past season, the Rebels reach the third round of the Tennessee Secondary School Athletic Association (TSSAA) Class 6A, Division I playoffs, falling to Blackman, 31-7. Maryville finished the 2025 season with a record of 11-2.
