The Maine high school football season wrapped up this past weekend with the Maine Principal’s Association (MPA) championships that took place at Portland High School’s Fitzpatrick Stadium and Lewiston High School, respectively.

Top-ranked Thornton Academy remains the No. 1 team in the state won the state’s highest classification, Class A, with a resounding 28-0 win over Portland, avenging last year’s loss to the Bulldogs. How does the final Top 25 Maine high school football rankings look out of the Pine Tree State this week?

The Massey Ratings, officially used during the BCS era, is a model that ranks sports teams by analyzing game outcomes, strength of schedule, and margin of victory.

Here is the latest Maine high school football Top 25 rankings, according to Massey as of Nov. 24.

1. Thornton Academy Golden Trojans

The Thornton Academy Golden Trojans (10-1) finished with a 10-3 record last season, with two of their three losses were against the Portland Bulldogs. The Trojans capped off a banner year by winning the MPA Class A state championship in a 28-0 shutout of Portland at Fitzpatrick Stadium.

The Trojans kicked off the season with a dominating 44-0 victory over Scarborough, but dropped their only game of the season in a 26-14 loss to Bedford (New Hampshire). Thornton Academy has won nine straight games en route to winning the MPA Class A state title.

It also marked the 200th career victory for Thornton Academy head coach Kevin Kezal.

2. Bonny Eagle Scots

Bonny Eagle (9-2) had themselves a chance to return to the state championship game for the first time since 2019 when they won it all, but ended up coming short in a 40-28 loss to Thornton Academy.

The Scots had a strong 2025 season after finishing below .500 last fall and have been the bounce back team of the year in Maine. That has been backed up with the seven straight victories, which included wins over WindhamNobleOxford Hills Comprehensive and most notably Portland in the last several weeks before the first loss to Thornton Academy.

In 2024, the Scots had more wins than losses, with their campaign ending in a defeat to Noble in the Maine high school football Class A state quarterfinals. It’s been a half dozen years since Bonny Eagle last won a state title and have nothing to be ashamed of with the kind of season they just had.

Quarterback Colin Moran has been playing well behind center, throwing for 1,268 yards and 16 touchdowns this season.

3. Portland Bulldogs

The Portland Bulldogs (9-3) had lost two straight games after a 34-7 loss to No. 2 Bonny Eagle and then falling to Thornton Academy, the very team they defeated for the Class A title last fall, in a 36-0 loss a few weeks ago. Bulldogs saw their five-game winning streak come to an end at the state championships when they fell, 28-0, to the Trojans on Saturday afternoon.

The Bulldogs features on offense arguably one of the top players in the state in Maine commit Cordell Jones (2,232 all-purpose yards, 29 total touchdowns), who accounted for 1,216 all-purpose yards and 18 touchdowns offensively last fall and transitioned to the quarterback position this season for Portland.

4. Greely Rangers

For the first time this entire season, the Greely Rangers (11-0) see themselves inside of the state’s Top 5 after a dominating performance in the Class C state championship, 41-6, over Leavitt.

What a difference a year can make for a program that was playing 8-man ball last year, transitioned back into 11-man and came away with a state championship. The Rangers showed signs of being able to win a state crown, including a 28-21 win over their rivals, Falmouth, during the regular season.

5. Westbrook

What a season it was for the Westbrook Blue Blazes (9-1) as they cruised to a 40-20 victory over No. 9 Cony for the Class B state championship.

The Blue Blazes received stellar play all season long from senior quarterback Giovanni Staples and junior running back Cole Tanner, fueling an offense that was averaging close to 30 points per game. Now Westbrook is able to celebrate a successful season by raising the Class B state championship and bringing it back to the Blue Blazes’ faithful.
