MIAMI, Fla.- In a rematch of last year’s Florida High School Athletic Association (FHSAA) Class 4A state championship, it would be the the defending champion American Heritage Patriots coming away with the title once again.

Behind the play of Troy signee Jamar Denson, the Patriots were able to defeat the Tigers for a second consecutive season and come away with the 33-28 victory on Saturday afternoon at Pitbull Stadium.

American Heritage defeated Jones, 40-31, in last year’s meeting between the two squads. The second go round between the two squads started off low scoring as both defenses found their footing in defending each other’s offense in the first half.

It would be the second half that provided all the offensive fireworks spectators would be looking for on the dais. The Patriots (10-5) would build up a 26-7 lead in the third quarter, after a pair of touchdown passes from Leon Strawder to Denson, who was named the game’s Most Valuable Player.

Jones (12-3) fought their way back into the game as Miami signee Dereon Coleman connected with Nebraska signee Larry Miles on a pair of touchdowns to stay within striking distance of the Patriots in the final period.

Trailing 33-28 with less than three minutes to go, American Heritage would get the ball back and run out the clock.
