Florida High School Football: Cardinal Newman stuns No. 16 Chaminade-Madonna for 1A title
In the most shocking Florida high school state championship result since 2023’s Berkeley Prep win over Miami Norland, the Cardinal Newman Crusaders did the unthinkable and knocked off No. 16 nationally ranked Chaminade-Madonna, 17-14, on Thursday afternoon at Pitbull Stadium in Miami.
It’s the first-ever state championship for Cardinal Newman in program history and the third for Crusaders’ head coach Jack Daniels, who led Palm Beach Dwyer to championships in 2009 and 2013.
For the first time since 2020, Chaminade-Madonna won’t be raising a state championship trophy as they were looking to clinch a 5-peat.
The Crusaders leaned on the talents of West Virginia signee Jyron Hughley, who opened up the scoring at the 10:05 mark in the second quarter on a 69-yard scoring run to put the Crusaders ahead 7-0.
The Lions would respond later in the quarter when Texas signee Derrek Cooper found his way into the endzone via a 1-yard run.

Tied at 7-all going into intermission, turnovers would soon prove to be a problem for the Lions in the second half. Late in the third period, Hughley would connect on a 35-yard touchdown pass to Ethan Holland to give Cardinal Newman a 14-7 lead.
Midway through the fourth quarter is when the Crusaders would put the game out of reach as place kicker Nathaniel Parks hit a 36-yard field goal to put Cardinal Newman up 17-7.
The Lions would score with less than a minute remaining, but the Crusaders would recover the ensuing onside kick with 46 seconds left in the game.
