You can never underestimate the heart of a champion and when it comes to defending Florida high school football Class 6A champion West Boca Raton, they never gave up on Friday in Seffner.

Miami signee Javian Mallory scored with less than 20 seconds to go and lifted the Bulls to a thrilling 14-13 victory over the undefeated Armwood Hawks on the road in a Class 6A state semifinal.

West Boca Raton now moves on to the Class 6A state championship next week to face either F.W. Buchholz or West Broward at Pitbull Stadium in Miami.

The Bulls opened up the scoring, taking advantage of a Maxwell Reid interception and turned it into points as quarterback Omari McNeal connected with Calerbe Hermane on a 20-yard touchdown to go up 7-0.

Armwood (13-1) would tie things up at 7-all when Auburn commit Rhys Brush hit Micah Hudgins on a 13-yard touchdown pass as both teams would eventually enter halftime with the same score.

The Hawks would get their first and only lead of the game when Brush scored on a 3-yard touchdown run with 3:46 remaining in the third quarter. Armwood couldn’t capitalize off a turnover on the ensuing possession, having a touchdown wiped out due to a penalty.

West Boca Raton got one more shot with the ball late, with Mallory scoring with 17 seconds remaining, coming away with the comeback victory.
