Former Texas high school football head coach faces suspension due to eligibility violations
The University Interscholastic League handed a former Texas high school football coach a one-year suspension for violating eligibility rules.
In addition to the suspension, the Houston Chronicle reported that former Fort Bend Austin head coach William “Trey” Hermann will also face a three-year probation. Hermann was the Bulldogs’ head coach when a student with failing grades participated in a junior varsity game.
While the student enrolled at Fort Bend Austin, he wasn’t added to the activity roster which the UIL mandates for grade monitoring. The student played in the game despite having three failing grades.
Hermann underwent an administrative leave after district officials learned about the violation. However, he resigned as a football coach and was reassigned to be an elementary school teacher.
It was the second time in as many years that Hermann violated Texas high school football eligibility rules. Last year, he satisfied a five-game suspension for allowing a homeschooled student to participate in UIL-sanctioned athletic events, a setup the Fort Bend ISD doesn’t allow until they opt out of the Senate Bill that kept this rule.

Like the first time, Hermann opted to resign after the discovery of the latest violations. While the school initially posted the job opening following his resignation, Fort Bend Austin cancelled his resignation.
The suspension ends Hermann’s tenure with the Bulldogs after three seasons. He coached the Bulldogs to an 11-19 record and zero playoff appearances. Fort Bend Austin finished at 2-8 this year.
Eight years ago, Hermann went on a paid administrative leave while serving as head coach of Taylor High School. He never recovered that role and the Katy Independent School District did not provide specifics regarding the investigation.
